After launching the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR with Face ID and edge-to-edge display design, Apple is bringing that same design to the iPad Pro lineup today. At an event in Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York, Apple announced the biggest revamp for its iPad Pro lineup since the device was first introduced in 2015. With the new iPad Pro lineup, Apple shows what a modern computing device should look like as it aims to replace Mac with iPad completely.
The timing of the new product lineup could not have been any better since more creative professionals have begun criticizing the company for neglecting creative professionals. With Mac and iPad sales declining in the past few quarters, Apple seems to giving the segment a renewed push with these new devices. As Apple seems to be losing ground, a number of PC manufacturers, mainly Microsoft, have introduced new lineup of Surface devices aimed at both professionals and creatives. With the new iPad Pro lineup, Apple is answering to convertible devices and also successfully merges iPhone and iPad into a unified device form factors differing mainly in terms of screen size.
Apple iPad Pro (2018): Specifications and Price
Apple is introducing the new 2018 iPad Pro in 11-inch and 12.9-inch screen sizes like in the past, but the devices have much smaller footprint thanks to the new edge-to-edge display design. While newer iPhones feature an OLED display, the new iPad Pro sticks to Retina LCD displays but offers higher resolution and pixel density. In terms of design, the new iPad Pro features a boxier design that we last saw on iPhone 5 series. The new iPad Pro can be described as perfect amalgamation of older and newer design language.
One of the major changes at the front is the end of Touch ID and with this iPad Pro lineup, Apple has finally migrated to Face ID as the primary method of biometric authentication on its devices. On the iPad Pro, the Face ID works in both portrait as well as landscape mode. Since there is no Touch ID, Apple is implementing same gesture support we first saw on the iPhone X last year.
Apple is getting rid of Touch ID on the iPad Pro as well might be a big deal but the real surprise is the switch over to USB Type-C port. Apple switched to USB Type-C ports for charging as well as data transfer with the launch of MacBook Pro and now it is doing so with the iPad as well. This strongly suggests that next year’s iPhone will also move to USB Type-C as the whole industry now supports USB Type-C port.

In terms of hardware, the iPad Pro is powered by Apple A12X Bionic, an octa-core CPU with 10 billion transistors, on in words, it is a faster version of Apple A12 Bionic CPU, which is the chip found on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Plus and iPhone XR. There is also an updated seven core GPU under the hood and support for upto 1TB storage. There is no denial that these new A12X chips are the fastest mobile CPU yet in the market.
Apple is also introducing an updated Apple Pencil this year. The new Apple Pencil magnetically attaches to the iPad Pro and automatically charges wirelessly. Tapping twice on the Apple Pencil 2 will switch applications and Apple is offering a smart keyboard folio and acts as a protective case as well.
