Earlier this month, Facebook launched a new tool for iPhones called 3D Photos. The feature uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to add interactive 3D effects to the portrait mode photos shot on iPhone. When you upload these photos on your news feed, your friends will be able view these photos in 3D as they move their smartphone, or a VR headset. The feature is now rolling out globally, and you want to try it out, here’s how to go about it.
To begin with, the Facebook 3D Photos feature only works with iPhones that feature dual cameras at the back. This includes the iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. The iPhone XR does come with AI backed portrait mode, but it is not listed as a compatible device, mostly due to the lack of dual cameras at the back.

How to post 3D Photos on Facebook from iPhone
Step One
To be able to post 3D Photos, open Facebook app on your phone, search for “Facebook 360” page and Like it. Then, close the app and open again.
Step Two
If you haven’t clicked any portrait photos yet, open camera app, switch to portrait mode, and click a couple of photos with background defocused and subject in focus. In a case where you already have portrait photos, there is no need to click again.
Step Three
Open Facebook, and tap on “What’s on your mind?” where you generally share your status, photos and links. Then, tap on 3D Photo which will open the phone gallery and show you all the portrait photos that clicked on your iPhone.
Step Four
Select the photo, the 3D Photos tool will analyze the photos, and add the third dimension (3D) effects to it. Next, tap on post, like you usually post your photos. Below are some sample photos we clicked.
Now, when your friends scroll through their timeline, they will be able to see these 3D Photos with effects. They can tilt their phones to get that extra effect. And while the feature is only available on iPhones, the 3D effects can be experienced on desktop, mobile or Android app too. Do note that the feature isn’t perfect, but nevertheless, it’s a good addition. Lastly, while it is only available for iPhones as of now, Facebook is working towards bringing this feature to Android soon.
