At its recently concluded special event in New York, Apple introduced new versions of its iPad Pro tablet. Available in 11-inch and 12.9-inch screen sizes, the 2018 iPad Pro features a refreshed design with much-slimmer bezels. It also does way with Touch ID, replacing it with Face ID, the facial-recognition technology that’s used on this year’s iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.
Along with the third-generation iPad Pro, the company also launched a new Apple Pencil that has some features of its own. Unfortunately, backward-compatibility isn’t one of those features. As indicated on Apple’s website, the new Apple Pencil only works with the latest Apple iPad Pro models. So, if you already have an iPad Pro, and you were planning on getting the new stylus, tough luck!
What’s worse is that this goes other way round as well, meaning that the previous-generation Apple Pencil won’t work with the newest iPad Pro models either.
In summation, if you want to take advantage of all the ‘productivity-enhancing’ features of the third-generation iPad Pro, you’ll have to shell out an additional $129 for the second-generation Apple Pencil.

All said, the new Apple Pencil does come with some nifty features. It can now attach magnetically to the new iPad Pro, and even charge automatically as it does so. The stylus features a ‘flat’ surface, which supports double-tap gestures. These let you execute different actions (changing the sketch tool) in a much more intuitive manner.
