Honor Magic 2 with 6 cameras, Kirin 980 SoC and slider mechanism launched: Price, specifications

Honor Magic 2 is the latest smartphone from Huawei’s e-brand, combining the design of Huawei P20 Pro with a slider mechanism. The smartphone was launched in China, and it is now officially the first smartphone with a total of six cameras, three on the front and three on the back.

With the launch of Magic 2, Honor joins Xiaomi which was the first to launch a smartphone with manual slider design, when it introduced the Mi MIX 3, early this week. The slider design can be seen as a workaround for the mechanical sliding components we saw on the Vivo NEX and Oppo Find X. The smartphone industry is split between mechanical components and sliders and both Honor and Xiaomi seem to prefer the later. Even Lenovo is expected to follow them with the launch of Z5 Pro later today.

Honor Magic 2: Price and Availability

The Honor Magic 2 comes in three different storage options, and is currently available for preorders in China. The smartphone is scheduled to begin shipping to consumers starting November 6. The base model comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage and is priced at RMB 3,799 (around Rs 40,300). There is also an 8GB RAM variant with option for 128GB or 256GB storage priced at RMB 4,299 (around Rs 45,600) and RMB 4,799 (around Rs 50,900) respectively.

Honor Magic 2: Specifications and Features

Honor Magic 2 borrows its design cues from that of Huawei P20 Pro, but has features that were introduced with the launch of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro last month. It sports a 6.4-inch OLED display with a Full HD+ resolution of 2280×1080 pixels translating to an aspect ratio of 19:9. This is among the few devices to have an edge-to-edge display design without a notch.

Under the hood is Huawei’s Kirin 980 SoC, fabricated using the 7nm process. There is 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB storage but Honor has skipped microSD card slot. In terms of imaging, there is a combination of 16-megapixel wide-angle, 24-megapixel monochrome and a 16-megapixel ultra wide-angle sensors on the back of the device.

Watch: OnePlus 6T Hands-On

For selfies, there is a combination of 16-megapixel camera with two 2-megapixel depth sensors. This selfie shooter setup combined with IR face scanner for 3D face unlock is embedded within the slider mechanism. While it supports Face Unlock, the company has also added an in-display fingerprint sensor. The connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, dual-band GPS, 4G LTE and USB Type-C port.

The Honor Magic 2 runs EMUI 9 based on Android 9 Pie, and comes with its virtual assistant called Yoyo. It is backed by a 3,400mAh battery, and uses the same 40W super charging technology that was announced last month. Honor says the Magic 2 can reach 50 percent of charge in just 15 minutes. It will be available in blue, red or black gradient finish starting November 6.
