LG patent shows a new smartphone with quad camera setup, no notch and rear fingerprint sensor

LG recently launched the V40 ThinQ, its first smartphone with a triple camera setup and a traditional fingerprint sensor on the back. The South Korean company has filed new design patents that suggest it has another new phone with quad-camera setup, and a traditional fingerprint sensor.

The design, first spotted by Dutch site LetsGoDigital, shows the company has submitted three versions of its upcoming quad-camera smartphone. Each design has more rounding on the corner of the screen as well as that of the phone itself. The quad camera setup is arranged similar to the square format we first saw on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. There is no sign of flash in the design patents filed by the company so it is a possibility that one of the circles in the design simply represents the LED flash and not a camera module.

One of the notable things here is that the fingerprint sensor is still placed on the back of the device. This new smartphone from LG could stick with standard capacitive sensor as opposed to in-display fingerprint sensor seen on premium flagship smartphones.

One of the best parts with such a design is that there is no notch or electronic or mechanical sliding movements with the device. Sure, it does not have an edge-to-edge display design like the iPhone X or iPhone XS series, but it definitely has much thinner bezels than its predecessors.

All the three design variations show that it has just enough room for the front camera, earpiece and other sensors. This patented design is part old-school and part new and may not really be a head turner but serve the purpose without adding a slow but futuristic in-display sensor or a notch to take the display to its edges.

In one of the design renders, LG even shows the smartphone featuring a 3.5mm headphone jack. Both LG’s G-series and V-series flagships have adopted notch design this year and if LG goes back to older design then it would show the decline in interest in notch. Honestly, a phone with thinner bezels and no notch sounds more interesting than the one with a deep notch like the Pixel 3 XL.
