Continuing its system of updating its smartphones twice a year, OnePlus has launched the OnePlus 6T. Its latest device is the successor the OnePlus 6, which was launched in May this year. And while the two phones come across as very similar from the specifications and features, there are some small changes in the new phone that justify its status as an update.
We explore the key differences between the OnePlus 6T and its predecessor, the OnePlus 6. These differences span the features and specifications of the devices, as well as the pricing.
Variants and Pricing
The OnePlus 6T changes the variant configurations, offering different options to that of the OnePlus 6. While the older phone started with the base variant sporting 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, the OnePlus 6T bumps up the storage to 128GB even on the base variant, while retaining RAM at 6GB. The remaining variants are the same – 8GB RAM / 128GB storage and 8GB RAM / 256GB storage.
In terms of pricing, the OnePlus 6T bumps up the starting price to Rs 37,999, from Rs 34,999 on the OnePlus 6. The remaining variants also see a price increase to Rs 41,999 for the 8GB / 128GB variant and Rs 45,999 for the 8GB / 256GB option.
Screen Unlock
The biggest change comes in the form of the new fingerprint sensor. While the OnePlus 6 has its fingerprint sensor at the rear, under the camera, the OnePlus 6T brings the sensor back to the front. However, considering that the phone sports a nearly edge-to-edge screen, the sensor is now under the phone’s display and works by the user placing their finger on the screen to unlock the phone.
The optical in-display fingerprint sensor uses light to illuminate the finger through the screen and authenticate the user as the owner of the phone. With this implementation, OnePlus claims that the design of the phone is aesthetically better and has been able to bring the sensor back to the front, which is perceived to be a better position for the sensor.

Smaller notch, bigger screen
The next big change comes at the front of the phone as well. The OnePlus 6T sports a 6.41-inch full-HD+ AMOLED screen, which is larger than the 6.28-inch option with similar resolution on the OnePlus 6. While the aspect ratio remains 19.5:9, there is more screen area on the newer phone because of the smaller notch.
While the OnePlus 6 sports a regular notch design, the OnePlus 6T goes with a smaller ‘waterdrop’ style notch. The smaller notch still incorporates the front camera and sensors, with the earpiece moved to the top edge of the phone. The small footprint increases the screen area on each side. Additionally, the chin is also slimmer, giving a better edge-to-edge experience on the screen.
Bigger Battery
The OnePlus 6T sees an upgrade in the battery department, with a larger 3,700mAh battery under the hood. It’s a little over 10 percent larger in capacity than the 3,300mAh battery on the OnePlus 6, which will ensure that the phone can keep up with the increased energy requirements of the larger screen and in-display fingerprint sensor.
However, charging remains the same, with OnePlus sticking to the Dash Charge standard that has been around since the OnePlus 3. The configuration hasn’t changed since then, with even a OnePlus 3 charger being Dash Charge compatible with even the OnePlus 6T.
Nightscape for improved low-light photography
Although the camera setup on the OnePlus 6T is the same as that on the OnePlus 6 – a 16-megapixel + 20-megapixel rear setup and a 16-megapixel front camera – the new phone has software implementations that claim to improve night shots, selfies and portraits. Photos shot on night mode are said to be brighter, more vivid and have significant noise reduction. However, these improvements, being software-based, could eventually come to older OnePlus models as well.
Smart Boost
The OnePlus 6T also features a software implementation called Smart Boost. This improves loading times for various apps and general performance by up to 20 percent, by utilizing the high RAM on the device. However, being a software implementation, this too could come to older OnePlus models.
Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box
While the OnePlus 6 launched with Android Oreo, the OnePlus 6T gets Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box. This is a significant improvement over the OnePlus 5T last year, which launched with Android Nougat even though Android Oreo had already rolled out. The new software also comes with OxygenOS 9.0 on top, although the OnePlus 6 has already received an update to the latest version of the software.
