IFA 2018: Huawei AI Cube is Alexa-powered smart speaker that doubles as a 4G router

Chinese smartphone giant Huawei is on a roll. The company announced Kirin 980, the world’s first 7nm AI mobile chipset, two new color for the P20 Pro with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage variant. The company also announced that the Mate 20 will be the first smartphone to be powered by the Kirin 980 SoC. And then came a surprise, the Amazon Alexa-powered AI Cube.

The Huawei AI Cube is not just any other smart speaker, but it is much more than that. For starters, it doubles as a 4G router. It comes with a slot for an LTE SIM card, allowing you to create a Wi-Fi hotspot to connect other devices with the speaker. It supports LTE Cat.6 for cellular speeds up to 300Mbps.

Alternatively, it has Wi-Fi 802.11ac that allows you to connect the speaker to your home Wi-Fi network. And if you want, there is also an RJ45 Ethernet port, just in case you want to connect the speaker to a wired internet connection.

On the top, the speaker has a button to turn the microphone on or off, two buttons to increase and decrease the volume. The speaker also comes with four microphones for far-field voice recognition. The AI Cube also comes with high-end 360-degree wireless speaker, with Huawei promising a “powerful sound system.”

Huawei hasn’t announced the price of AI Cube yet. But the company did mention that it will be launched in Europe towards the end of the year.
