Internet and software giant Google has announced the rollout of the redesigned Wear OS 2.1 for Android-powered smartwatches in the market. The rollout comes almost a month after the company initially announced the redesign for its in-house wearables operating system. The company added that it is rolling out this new update to all the compatible wearables. This means that almost all the smartwatches will get the update if they were released after the announcement of the Android Wear 2.0 or they were updated to Wear 2.0 which means that only a small number of smartwatches will not get the latest update.
According to a report by 9to5Google, the new redesign comes with important changes to the interface of the operating system. For instance, swiping from the top will give access to quick settings, swiping from the bottom will give access to notifications, swiping from the left will give access to Google Fit and swiping from the right will give access to Google Assistant. In addition to the swipes, the new redesign will also provide “proactive” information which is similar to what we have seen in the Google Now cards.

Google has not clarified the rollout schedule for the existing smartwatches but it is likely that the new version will be rolled out to compatible smartwatches in coming weeks. It is likely that most smartwatch makers will roll out the update in a staged manner.
Users can also head to the ‘System’ menu in the ‘Settings’ app and then tap on the ‘About’ sub-menu and tap on the ‘System Updates’ option to check if there is any pending update for their Wear OS-powered smartwatch.
