The Redmi 5A is still considered to be one of the best budget smartphones in the market. However, it is slowly getting outdated by newer smartphones that have trendier features to offer. To stay ahead in the game, Xiaomi now has finally launched its much-awaited successor the Redmi 6A in India. The new budget smartphone is not only in-sync with the current features but is also priced similarly as its predecessor. Let’s quickly compare the features of the two smartphones and see what more the Redmi 6A offers over the Redmi 5A.
Pricing and availability
Interestingly Xiaomi is keeping the price of the Redmi 6A the same as the Redmi 5A. Both smartphones come in two variants that are priced at Rs 5,999 and Rs 6,999, respectively. While the base variant is the same with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, the higher-end variant of the Redmi 6A comes with 2GB of RAM with 32GB of storage. The second variant of Redmi 5A comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.
Launched in November last year, the Redmi 5A is still available only through frequent flash sales that are held on Flipkart. While Xiaomi hasn’t mentioned it, we believe the Redmi 6A will also be made available the same way. However, this time the smartphone is said to be available on the Amazon India. It will go on sale on September 19 at 12:00PM.
Screen and design
The Xiaomi Redmi 5A comes with a 5-inch screen that features an HD resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels and an aspect ratio 16:9. This is one of the key areas where the Redmi 5A seems a little outdated compared to its competition. For that reason, Xiaomi has equipped the Redmi 6A with a 5.45-inch screen, which features a more conventional HD+ resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels and a much taller 18:9 aspect ratio. This will help make the experience more immersive.
Besides the bigger screen, the Redmi 6A looks more or less the same as its predecessor. One of the key difference is that the Redmi 6A features on-screen navigational buttons, instead of three capacitive buttons on the Redmi 5A. It also features a different rear camera setup. That said, both smartphones are available in the same four color options that include, Black, Gold, Rose Gold and Blue.
Processor and battery
There are noticeable changes made on the inside as well. The Redmi 5A underneath its hood is powered by a modest Snapdragon 425 SoC, which comes with four cores and maximum clock speeds of 1.4GHz. While it offers a decent performance, Xiaomi has equipped the Redmi 6A with a more recent MediaTek Helio P22 quad-core chipset. The processor also carries four cores but features higher clock speeds 2.0GHz.
What makes the chipset even more efficient is the fact that it is based on 12nm process which makes it more battery efficient compared to the 28nm based chipset featured on the Redmi 5A. Xiaomi claims the Redmi 6A to perform 33 percent better than the Redmi 5A. That said, both smartphone feature the same 3,000mAh battery.
Camera
In the camera department, both smartphones come with a 13-megapixel camera at the back that supports PDAF and is equipped with an LED flash. However, the camera on Redmi 6A further comes with EIS (electronic image stabilization) support for video recording.
Things look the same at the front as well. Both the smartphones come with a 5-megapixel sensor for taking selfies, but the one on the Redmi 6A is backed by AI portrait mode. The feature helps the camera recognize the scene better and make the right adjustments to deliver good looking selfies.
Operating system and connectivity features
Launched last year, the Redmi 5A runs on Android Nougat operating system that is layered with MIUI 9 on top. Xiaomi hasn’t made any official announcement of the device getting the Android 8.1 Oreo update yet. The Redmi 6A on the other hand does come with the Android 8.1 Oreo OS layered with MIUI 9.6. It is said to be updated to MIUI 10 at a later stage.
