The pursuit of all-screen smartphones has led to manufacturers launching devices with interesting form factors. And even though it was Vivo that first outed the pop-out camera-toting NEX, it’s Oppo Find X’s slider form factor that other Android OEMs seem to have picked up as the one to draw ‘inspiration’ from.
At the recently wrapped up IFA 2018 consumer electronics show in Berlin, Honor teased the Magic 2, its new smartphone that’ll have a slide-out camera mechanism. Not really wanting to go out of the limelight, Xiaomi followed soon after, with the company’s president posting a render of the upcoming Mi MIX 3, which will come with a slider of its own.
A video showing the alleged Mi MIX 3 and its slider mechanism at work has now surfaced online. While the device in the 10-second long video looks legit, there’s a (pretty big) catch. It appears that the Mi MIX 3’s slider mechanism is manual, unlike Oppo Find X’s motorized solution.
If that’s indeed the case, it means users will have to slide out the rear module manually in order to use the front and rear cameras. While that may seem like a downer, it can actually be beneficial.

How? Well, motorized components can fail over time after repeated use, so manually sliding out the rear module is probably worth the extra effort. Secondly, it’ll ensure that the slider doesn’t expand/retract due to accidental touches. Then of course, there’s the battery life savings.
Whatever surprises Xiaomi has in store, we’ll find out soon, as the Mi MIX 3 is likely to go official on September 15.
