India is a major smartphone market, and while there is a smartphone for every budget segment, the entry-level and affordable segment is very lucrative. It is important because the segment has first time smartphone buyers who are just switching from a feature phone. The competition has been fierce, with the Xiaomi Redmi 5A being the top seller. Huawei today launched the Honor 7S smartphone in India to compete in the entry-level segment. Here’s how it competes with the Redmi 5A, 10.or D2 and Samsung Galaxy J2 Core (Go Edition).
Price in India and availability
The Honor 7S is priced at Rs 6,999 and will go on sale starting September 14 at 2:00PM, exclusively via Flipkart. The Galaxy J2 Core (Go Edition) smartphone is priced at Rs 6,190 and available via offline retailers and Samsung’s e-store. The 10.or D2 is offered in two variants – 2GB RAM priced at Rs 6,999, and 3GB RAM priced at Rs 7,999, and is available via Amazon India. Lastly, the Redmi 5A is priced at Rs 5,999 for the 2GB RAM variant and Rs 6,999 for 3GB RAM.
Display
The Honor 7S and 10.or D2 come with 5.45-inch HD+ 18:9 display, whereas the Redmi 5A and Samsung phones come with regular displays. The Redmi 5A has 5-inch HD display, whereas the Galaxy J2 Core (Go Edition) has a 5-inch TFT display that runs at a resolution of 540×960 pixels.
Specifications
The Honor 7S is powered by a MediaTek MT6739 chipset paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB internal storage. A microSD card slot for further expansion is also present. The 10.or D2 and Redmi 5A are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC with paired with 2GB RAM with 16GB storage, or 3GB RAM with 32GB storage options. The Samsung Galaxy J2, on the other hand, is powered by an Exynos 7570 SoC paired with 1GB of RAM and 8GB internal storage.
Cameras and battery
In the photography department, the Honor 7S, Redmi 5A and 10.or D2, all feature a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front snapper. On the Honor 7S the front camera also supports face unlock. The Galaxy J2 Core (Go Edition) on the other hand, comes with an 8-megapixel rear snapper with LED flash, and a 5-megapixel front camera.
Talking about battery, the Honor 7S is armed with a 3,020mAh battery, the 10.or D2 comes with a 3,200mAh battery, the Redmi 5A comes with a 3,000mAh one, whereas the Galaxy J2 Core has 2,600mAh battery to keep things ticking.

OS and connectivity
In the software department, the Honor 7S runs on Android 8.1 Oreo OS with EMUI 8.0 skin on top. The 10.0r D2 also runs on Android 8.1 Oreo, whereas the Redmi 5A runs on Android 7.1.2 Nougat OS, with MIUI skin on top. The Galaxy J2 Core is a part of Android Go initiative, and runs Android Oreo (Go Edition) out-of-the-box. However, unlike other Android Go devices, there is still a layer of Samsung UI on top of the OS.
The device comes preloaded with a host of Google Go apps like Gmail Go, Google Maps Go, Assistant Go, Gboard Go, and YouTube Go to name a few. In terms of connectivity, all smartphones feature dual-SIM card slots, 4G LTE with VoLTE connectivity, Bluetooth, and GPS.
