Today is a day to celebrate for console gamers, because for the first time ever, Sony has enabled cross-play with Xbox and Switch for Fortnite. This has been an age old sore spot for gamers, because Sony and Microsoft have always kept to their sides of the river leaving gamers stranded on either of the sides. And Fortnite has become the first game ever to get cross play on all the platforms it is on.
“We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution,” said John Kodera, Sony PlayStation chief, in the blog post. “The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems.”
Sony has been blocking cross-play of games for a really long time now, even when Microsoft has been open about it and implemented it with other platforms for Xbox.
And now that this long pending situation has been taken care of, Epic Games has announced that it is working on a solution for those players that had opened a separate account to play Fortnite on PlayStation.
1) An account-merging feature to combine Battle Royale purchases, coming in November.
2) Enabling unlinking a console from one Fortnite account, and relinking to another Fortnite account. Coming in a few days.

“For players who created an extra account to play Fortnite on multiple console platforms, we’re working on two things,” wrote Epic Games on its Twitter handle. “1) An account-merging feature to combine Battle Royale purchases, coming in November. 2) Enabling unlinking a console from one Fortnite account, and relinking to another Fortnite account. Coming in a few days.”

Sony has opened up a beta for the Fortnite Cross-Play for PS4 today where it will be testing the performance of the game on cross-play. This could just be the beginning of a new era for game on console.
