Remember the rumors about Google working on a cheaper variant of its flagship Google Pixel lineup for developing markets? A new report has all but confirmed that Google is indeed working on launching a budget Google Pixel. According to ET, the company is working on launching a “mid-tier” Pixel-branded smartphone that could be priced between Rs 40,000 and Rs 50,000 to take the fight to the competition. The report pointed out that Google is planning to take on OnePlus, and other smartphone makers who have launched their offerings with flagship smartphone hardware under Rs 45,000.
The report pointed out that the company will continue to work on its Google Pixel 3 lineup to launch the premium Google Pixel 3 and the 3 XL to take on the likes of Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy Note 9, and the upcoming 2018 iPhone lineup. Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are likely to be priced around Rs 70,000 to Rs 85,000. According to the report, the mid-tier smartphone is aimed at emerging markets including India, and the company is planning to launch the device early next year after launching the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL in the market.

Google Pixel hardware team recently visited the country to understand the market. Even though the company has global plans, the team “explored the possibility in the Indian market for such a device.” The report also pointed out that the reason for Google to make a mid-range Pixel-branded device is to give them an option to upgrade from the devices offered by Vivo, and Oppo.
The company has not issued any statement at the time of writing in response to the report. Another reason for the company to make a cheaper smartphone is to establish itself in the market.
