Apple Watch face that celebrates gay pride has been disabled in Russia

Apple introduced a special pride Apple watch face at its WWDC event in June. The special Apple Watch face displays a rainbow flag that inspires to support gay pride and take a stance against LGBTQ discrimination. Not just that, Apple had also introduced a special rainbow patterned Watch strap alongside of it, sales of which helped the company to further support the LGBTQ community. Now, a recent report from the Verge suggests that Apple has disabled the Watch face for its Russian users.

According to the new report, the unavailability of the pride Watch face in Russia, has been spotted by many Reddit users in the last couple of months. However, it was recently brought to attention by a tweet from Guilherme Rambo, which states that the Watch face has been hardcoded not to show up on Apple Watches that are paired to an iPhone being used with a Russian locale.

This doesn’t come as a big surprise as Russia had passed a gay propaganda law in country in 2013, which simply looks down on the LGBTQ community and labels it as being illegal. People who are accused of being gay or show support towards the community are slapped with fines and in some cases even face jail time.

While Apple seems to have a liberal stance on most issues, by disabling the pride Watch face in Russia it seems to be taking a back seat in these matters. It is also possible that the company could have taken the step to protect the minority group in the country, by preventing something that would draw attention to those users.
