BlackBerry confirms Key2 LE launch at IFA 2018: Everything you need to know

BlackBerry is set to launch the Key2 LE, a cheaper version of its Key2 smartphone at IFA 2018. While we have heard a lot of rumors about the device in the past, now the company is officially confirming the release. TCL, the brand-licensee of BlackBerry, has revealed that it is preparing to release the toned-down version at IFA in Berlin.

The Key2 is no doubt a great smartphone with secure software and physical keyboard that can be a joy to type. But it falls a bit on the expensive side and competes with more powerful and premium offerings like the OnePlus 6. Now, the company wants to right the wrongs by offering similar specifications at a lower price tag.

Ahead of the official launch, the BlackBerry Key2 LE had leaked in the form of official press renders. The leaked images revealed that the smartphone will be virtually identical to the Key2 and might swap the polycarbonate textured back for a plastic shell. The Key2 LE might also use a plastic frame instead of metal frame seen on the Key2. It is also said to come with a wider choice of colors.

With Key2 LE, BlackBerry might further cost by opting for a Snapdragon 636 SoC and pair with 4GB of RAM. The BlackBerry Key2, on the other hand, packs a more powerful Snapdragon 660 chipset. While the camera setup is not revealed, BlackBerry Key2 LE might offer a dual rear camera system with 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors.

Honestly, BlackBerry cutting cost this way does not really matter till the time it offers that same physical QWERTY keyboard. The leaks so far point at BlackBerry Key2 LE retaining that excellent and clicky keyboard found on Key2. It will be coupled with BlackBerry’s DTEK security suite, making it one of the most secure Android smartphones out there.
