RFRF an affiliate of RSS wants to create a ‘Bharatiya’ internet with local language search engine

Research for Resurgence Foundation (RFRF), which is a wing of the RSS’s Bharatiya Shikshan Mandal, has launched its own local language email domain called Pata.domain in order to create several Indian-centric technological products, including an Indian search engine. The data center to store all the emails under it is said to be located in Nagpur.

Mukul Kanitkar, the national organizing secretary of BSM and the man behind the project was quoted by Indian Express saying, “We are thinking about a total Bharatiya Internet. Not only with email ID, but search engine, then Bharatiya domain name, websites, content, and everything. That is the plan we are working on.”

The organization is also said to be looking into the security aspect of the platform. However, Kantikar does mention that it will take time considering the use of imported hardware. He was further quoted saying, “If you are using a Cisco router and a Chinese connector, you cannot be sure that your data is private.” That said, the organization is also working with startup and Indian-made wires and chips in order to encourage routers and connector manufacturing in India.

While the service was launched at an RFRF event at Vigyan Bhavan on Saturday, the organization is currently researching algorithm that will help promote indigenous content on their local language search engine. Kantikar states that currently any search done on the internet gives out western references first. While there is nothing wrong with it, he does claim that if they are able to do it in Gondi, then they can get their own reference as well.

Kantikar believes that having a local language search engine will change the common psychology among people that knowing English is required to use the Internet. He also aims to change the Indian internet from being a video entertainment platform to making it more educational.

RFRF is currently working with Data XGen Technologies, which is the first linguistics email platform in India. The two organizations signed an MoU last month. RFRF will also paying XGen a fee of a few lakh rupees for its services, which is said to increase as its services increases.

The Pata.bharat domain will be for public use and will feature seven Indian scripts, which include Bangla, Gujarati, Punjabi, Telugu, Hindi, English, Tamil, and Urdu. It will correspond with 14 Indian languages and will also be pushed to partner universities of RFRF.

The email service on the other hand is said to provide 1GB of storage to email users on both iOS and Android devices. Users will need to authenticate their account via a mobile phone number and an OTP. The web access is enabled via mobile linkage rather than a username or password. While the path has been setup, the RFRF search engine is expected to see the light of the day in the next year or two.

LG Watch W7 running Wear OS could be launched alongside LG V40 ThinQ

While we’ve already been expecting to see the LG V40 ThinQ at LG‘s upcoming launch event on October 3, a new report suggests that we could also see the LG Watch W7 launched at the event. While the device was first heard of in April this year, it could finally see the light of day many months after the first bits of information on the new smartwatch were seen.

The report comes via a tweet by popular smartphone leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks), which suggests that the new smartwatch could be launched at the same event. The smartwatch will run Wear OS, and could also likely be powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 SoC, which was announced last month.

The Wear OS platform from Google has been adopted by many manufacturers thanks to its open nature and tendency to play well with Android smartphones, but it’s still known for its flaws. The Apple Watch range has turned out to be much more popular in comparison, as have fitness trackers and wearables from companies such as Xiaomi, Huawei and Fitbit.

WATCH: Apple Watch Series 4 First Look

The LG Watch W7 is likely to come with a 1.2-inch circular (360×360-pixel) P-OLED screen, and could also come with a heart-rate sensor and GPS built in. Although the old rumors pointed at different hardware, it’s likely that LG has improved the product and made it more current, given the improvements now available in the form of the newer Qualcomm chipset for wearables and more. We’ll know for sure when the launch event takes place on October 3, where we’ll also see the latest flagship device from LG – the V40 ThinQ – launched.

Nokia 5.1 Plus goes on sale for the first time in India: Price, offers and more

HMD Global, the firm behind ‘Nokia’ smartphones, last month introduced the budget Nokia 5.1 Plus smartphone in India alongside the Nokia 6.1 Plus. The device is now going on sale in the country for the first time. It comes as a successor to the Nokia 5.1 that too made a debut in India few months ago. Like the Nokia 6.1 Plus, this too has a notch on top of the screen and shares some of the specifications but is a less powerful device nonetheless.

Nokia 5.1 Plus Review: Design and software is the focus

In the crowded budget segment, smartphone manufacturers are trying to differentiate their offering in terms of design, features and hardware that they pack. HMD Global, the company that revived Nokia, has been focusing on the design and software offering on its smartphones, and the new Nokia 5.1 Plus (Nokia X5 in some markets) is no different. It features stock Android 8.1 Oreo with Android One software, a front and back glass design, dual rear cameras and a full screen display with a notch.

Priced at Rs 10,999, the Nokia 5.1 Plus is available to purchase exclusively via Flipkart. In this price range, there are a bunch of interesting options in the form of the Realme 2, Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro, and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 to name a few. All of these smartphones have their own unique features, but how well does the Nokia 5.1 Plus hold up against them? After using the smartphone for a few days, here’s what I think.

Watch: Nokia 7 Plus First Look

The Good: Design, Display, Software

Realme, when it launched its first smartphone – the Realme 1 – proved that you don’t need to splurge to get a premium-looking smartphone. The same goes with the Nokia 5.1 Plus as well. You get a front and back glass design with a smooth glossy finish which looks and feels good. But as is the case with all smartphones with a glass design, this one too attracts fingerprints, and you’ll need to wipe it clean every time. The frame is made from polycarbonate, and it also has a glossy finish.

Up front, the Nokia 5.1 Plus comes with a 5.8-inch HD+ display with a resolution of 1520×720 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19:9. The display has a notch at top which houses the earpiece, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor and the front camera. Nokia has used a good panel and it offers decent legibility under direct sunlight. Color reproduction is also pretty decent.

Now, despite a big display, the smartphone is compact in size, and that’s one thing I liked about it. Easy to hold, this makes one-handed use a breeze. The back of the device houses a vertically placed dual-camera module and an LED flash which is placed at the center, ensuring proper symmetry. Just below the camera modules, you have the circular fingerprint scanner, and it is pretty fast in unlocking the device.

Talking about ports placement, you get a hybrid dual-SIM card slot on the left, power button and volume rocker on the right, and a 3.5mm headphone socket on the top. While other manufacturers in this price range offer a micro-USB port, it is good to see Nokia going with a Type-C port for charging and data transfers on the Nokia 5.1 Plus. This makes it one of the most affordable devices to sport the newer port.

Lastly, when we talk about software, one good thing about Nokia smartphones is that they run on stock Android, being a part of the Android One program. For now, it runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with September security patch, and it will get Android 9 Pie update in the coming months. Seeing how Nokia has been keeping its promises when it comes to software updates, I won’t be surprised to see the Pie update before the end of the year, if not earlier.

Unlike other smartphones that come with the Face Unlock feature, the Nokia 5.1 Plus does include this feature, but the implementation is a bit different. Rather than adding a separate feature, Nokia is making use of Google’s Smart Lock feature that has existed since Android Lollipop. You can find it under Settings > Security & Location > Smart Lock. It is not fast, but works pretty well.

Lastly, the 3,060mAh battery on the Nokia 5.1 Plus is good enough to offer a day’s worth talk time, and more. Even with heavy usage, I didn’t require charging until the end of the day. And on a weekend, with controlled usage, the battery lasted for nearly two days, which is not bad at all.

The Bad: Hardware, Cameras

Whether you are buying a budget or a flagship phone, performance matters, and the Nokia 5.1 Plus disappoints. It’s not that performance is bad, but I would have expected a little better. It is powered by a MediaTek Helio P60 SoC with an octa-core CPU, paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage. Most of the time, the device runs smoothly, but when you put some load on it, it starts to give up slowly.

When you are surfing the internet with 2-3 tabs open, it runs smoothly. But the moment you open about 5 tabs or more, the lag is noticeable. Also, when you have apps like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Slack running in background, the phone starts slowing down, and you need to wait a few seconds till it reacts. It is clearly noticeable when playing games as well. Casual games like Subway Surfers and Sonic Dash run smoothly, but it can’t handle graphics intense games like Asphalt 9 or PUBG. Even with graphics settings at low, there is too much of stuttering. Devices in the same price segment with chipsets from Qualcomm or Huawei-HiSilicon tend to perform better.

Lastly, we come to the camera. The Nokia 5.1 Plus features a dual-camera setup at the back – a 13-megapixel primary sensor of f/2.0 aperture, coupled with a 5-megapixel depth sensor. Nokia has added AI chops for scene detection and to add bokeh effects. I’ve used the Realme 2 and Zenfone Max Pro M1, and they click decent photos, but I cannot say the same with Nokia 5.1 Plus.

To begin with, there is a shutter lag – after you click on the camera shutter button, it takes about two seconds to capture the photo, and another one second to save in the camera roll. And even after all of this, the quality isn’t as good as you would expect. The photos look dull, the bokeh effects look too artificial, dynamic range isn’t too good, and sometimes it over exposes. Selfies taken on the 8-megapixel front camera too look bearable, but I would have expected a bit better. It is not that the camera is bad, but to get that one perfect picture, you need to click a few times and get your framing perfectly. Below are some camera samples that I managed to click after a few attempts.

Verdict

The Nokia 5.1 Plus is a good attempt from HMD Global and had a lot going for it, such as the compact form factor, front and back glass design, and Android One software that promises timely software updates. The USB Type-C port is a welcome addition in this price segment. It also offers good battery life, and you don’t have to worry about sailing through the day provided you start with a full charge.

However, the smartphone misses out on the performance aspect. The frequent lags and poor camera performance are a couple of factors that may hold you off. In the same price, you could go for the Zenfone Max Pro M1 which comes with a better chipset, a bigger 5,000mAh battery, and near-stock Android as well, albeit in the form of a lightly-skinned Zenfone UI. Otherwise, the Realme 2 and Redmi 6 Pro aren’t bad options either. However, they come with custom Android skins, which might take away from performance and flexibility.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 new image leaks shows Xiao AI settings, sliding camera

Xiaomi’s newest flagship, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is set to launch soon and the rumors about the phone is rife with speculations of a sliding display and inclusion of Xiao AI feature. And this new leak kind of confirms it. We have seen numerous leaks that talk about how the front camera of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will be in the sliding form, but this new leak on Weibo that shows a GIF of how the phone sliding camera might work.

The two new images confirm what we have known about the design for a while now, but the still images has its edges blurred. This we believe is to protect the button placement on the smartphone. But the still image apparently shows the Xiao AI settings screen which seems to confirm the addition of the feature to the new smartphone. This page was leaks previously as well, and it brought some details with it. A single press on the Xiao AI button will apparently wake the phone and the rest of it will work the same way Samsung’s Bixby button does.

Users will be able to ask Xiao AI question by keeping the button pressed down, but unlike Samsung, Xiaomi is allowing users to customize the button mapping. Users will be able to select an action of their choice when pressing down on the Xiao AI button.

The GIF (check out here) demonstrates how the camera will slide out like the traditional sliding phones and in a rather smooth manner. We have seen a video that showed it doing similar action previously. This slider will bring out the front camera as well as the sensors of the phone, which means that if the phone does have a face unlock feature, the users will have to slide out the camera to use the function.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3: Expected Price and Specifications

The Mi Mix 3 is expected to feature a 6.4-inch Quad HD+ AMOLED display and will ditch the notch seen on Mi 8 and front camera placed on the chin in the previous Mi Mix smartphones. It will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC coupled with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and up to 128GB internal storage.

It is expected to feature dual 12-megapixel rear camera setup aided by AI and a 20-megapixel selfie shooter at the front. The selfie camera will be coupled with additional depth sensors for the Face ID implementation. The Mi Mix is also tipped to pack a huge 4,000mAh battery and support Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4.0.

The Philippe Starck-designed Mi Mix 3 could be the most premium device yet from Xiaomi. It is expected to run MIUI 10 based on Android 8.1 Oreo and will be among the first devices to get Android 9 Pie update. It is also expected to bring wireless charging support and could be priced at RMB 3,799 (around Rs 38,100) for the base variant.

New Policy states Ola and Uber to be fined for cancelling rides, also recommends better safety measures

Cab services like Ola and Uber have no doubt made it really easy to commute in metro cities. However, there are still some issues many face with them. One of the most common is the drive cancelling the ride, generally in most crucial hour of need. But that could soon be a thing of the past, as a new regulatory policy being passed by government of Delhi, claims that a fine worth Rs 25,000 will be imposed on cab hailing services for canceling trips.

As reported by Times of India, the new rule is a part of the, ‘Licencing and Regulation of App-based Aggregators Rules 2017,’ which has been drafted under a panel headed by PWD minister S Jain. It is said to be finalized soon and sent to Delhi for approvals. Alongside that, the panel has also come with a new City Taxi Scheme 2017.

With the new fine, the new policy also ensures to cap surging prices while bringing along new safety measures. The draft states that in the event of a passenger reporting of molestation or misconduct, the cab services will have to ones to file a police complaint. A fine of Rs 1 lakh will be imposed upon them, if they fail to do so.

Not just that, once the rules have been passed, both service providers will also need to setup 24 x 7 working call centers for customer. Panic buttons in vehicles and apps are also said to be mandatory. Pressing the panic button will alert the local police immediately. The app will also allow the customer to share cab details along with their location with two people. The app-based aggregators will also have to get a license from the government to operate in Delhi.

On the driver front, the policy mentions that the service providers are required to provide visible picture of the driver along with a vehicle description. It also mentions that people who have been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in the last seven years, will not be permitted to drive. Lastly, the policy also encourages the aggregators to bring in more women drivers on their platform.

The City Taxi Scheme deals with private taxis, mostly ‘Kaali Peelis’. It states that now all taxis are required to be air conditioned. The cabs are also said to be divided in an economy and luxury class, based on the vehicle’s length. The former are said to sport a canary Yellow color, while the latter will be boasting a Green color. Taxis are also said to have digital meters and an LCD panel on roof that will tell bystanders if it’s available or not. The taxis are also required to use clean fuel such as  LPG, CNG or electric and support GPS functionality as well.

Lenovo ThinkPad E480 Review: Reliable and affordable business laptop

As a tech enthusiast, I measure the success of any product by looking at how constant it has been since its inception. In terms of consistency, only a few product comes to mind that has had a run outshining the bigger part of the industry. Apple iPhone, Porsche 911, Range Rover Sport, Boeing 747, Rolex Submariner and Omega Speedmaster immediately comes to mind. One such product, which has stayed constant, over the course of many years is the Lenovo ThinkPad.

Every time when I enter an enterprise setting, the most common element that I see is the black laptops that people carry around the workplace. It is rather impossible to not notice and it has been the only constant fixture for nearly two decades. If you are a new employee who joined a modern workplace recently then there is a fair possibility that your employer offered you a black piece of computer, also called as ThinkPad.

While the ThinkPads have an impressive connect with IT administrators and enterprise customers, they are also facing renewed competition from other PC makers like Dell and HP. Like everything else in tech, the ThinkPads are also being challenged and Lenovo is making sure that ThinkPads evolve for the modern world, without losing their DNA. In the past few years, Lenovo has revamped the lineup to offer entry-level models in the form of ThinkPad E-series to very high-end models such as ThinkPad X series and workstation-grade ThinkPad P series. While there is no one size fits all, there is a ThinkPad for everyone and the ThinkPad E480 is for those who are looking for their first ever ThinkPad. So, the question is does the ThinkPad E480 serve as a good first-time enterprise notebook? Let’s break that down.

Design and Display

The Lenovo ThinkPad E480 is a monolithic block of metal painted black on the exterior as well as interior. The black finish is matte and it gathers a lot of fingerprints, especially if you have oily hands like mine. I always had a piece of microfiber cloth handy to wipe those marks away.

The top shell of the ThinkPad E480 only features a ThinkPad logo on the top left hand corner that has a ‘Red Dot’ LED embedded inside it. I really like the addition of a small LED since Apple has decided to get rid of the backlighting on its logo with the recent MacBook Pro models. On the interior, things are rather subdued with a ThinkPad logo sitting on the right side of the trackpad while the Intel logo confirming the processor model is on the left.

The fingerprint sensor, which is as quick as anything that we have seen on modern smartphones, is placed above the ThinkPad logo. There is a dedicated power button on the top right corner of the inner keyboard layout and I would prefer a fingerprint sensor embedded within this button. This would have made for a much cleaner look inside. The display is a 14-inch panel with one of the thickest bezels you could find on a laptop in 2018.

While the bezels surrounding the display have been trimmed a bit, the forehead and chin of the display still have huge bezels. This means the standard webcam is placed right where you would expect while Lenovo logo and a logo confirming the model number i.e. E480 sit on either side of the bottom chin. There is a ThinkPad keyboard with 84-key layout, where the Red nub is placed between the keys ‘G’, ‘H’ and ‘B’. The keyboard is followed by a trackpad that has a layout similar to that of a traditional mouse.

On the left side, there is a USB Type-C port, HDMI port, two regular USB Type A port and a 3.5mm audio jack. The right is home to Kensington lock slot, Ethernet port, USB Type-A port and microSD card slot. In a nutshell, the Lenovo ThinkPad E480 is unapologetically designed like a ThinkPad and that is definitely the beauty of this machine.

The display, which is HD ready and not Full HD, is meant to be used mostly indoors and won’t be that great for field work. It has very good viewing angles and the brightness is good when you are looking at the device indoors but under sunlight, you will need to crank up the brightness to the “Brightest” setting and might even be left wanting a bit more of brightness. Other than that, there is little to complain about the display on this model. It is not as sharp as those 4K panels on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon but it is not bad either.

Keyboard and Trackpad

Before we get to performance and battery life, it is important to talk about the keyboard and trackpad. Yes, the smartphone is our primary computing device these days and as a result, our input devices are changing rapidly as well. But, when it comes to getting things done, you really need a good old keyboard and mouse.

On the Lenovo ThinkPad E480, you will not be disappointed even a bit while typing or attempting some kind of gesture to navigate Windows 10. The keyboard is an absolutely delight to type and trust me, I type a lot. The keys have incredible 1.8mm key travel and every time when you hit a switch, there is a sense of understanding that you know, that you have hit the right key.

For instance, I always keep looking at the screen while typing and my fingers basically glide through the keyboard. I am so accustomed to the 84-key setup that my fingers have  memorized the layout. While I’m prone to a lot of typos, I noticed a significant improvement while typing on the ThinkPad E480. The keyboard also supports two-stage backlighting, which makes it really useful. The position of the Function and Ctrl key is swapped, compared to what is usually found on laptops.

The trackpad is built using Microsoft’s precision drivers and it is a joy to use. For starters, it is relatively large and the placement of right and left click buttons on the top instead of the bottom, gives plenty of surface to move your cursor. The functional keys are very much clicky but most hardcore ThinkPad fans will rather love to stick with the red nub on the keyboard, also referred to as TrackPoint.

A good keyboard is not anymore a necessity but when you have one, it can be a boon. As I understood while using the ThinkPad E480, my typing speed registered a marginal jump while the accuracy just got much better.

Performance and Battery Life

Lenovo offers a number of options when it comes to configuring the ThinkPad E480. You can configure a base model with 7th generation Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM and 1TB HDD spinning at 5400RPM and max out at variant with 8th generation Core i7 CPU coupled with 8GB of RAM and 1TB HDD that spins at 5400RPM. For the review, Lenovo sent us a mid-tier model with 8th generation Intel Core i5, 8GB of RAM and a faster 500GB HDD spinning at 7200RPM. This particular model is priced at Rs 53,500 and listing claims 4GB of RAM instead of 8GB found on our review unit.

In terms of performance, the ThinkPad E480 does not offer the highest of speeds but is enough for most business users. The laptop, advertised as business ready, does manage basic functions like browsing through the web, analyzing documents or creating powerpoint really easy. It, however, does not have the guts to handle challenging applications like video editing tool.

The ThinkPad E480 packs a 3-cell battery which lasted me just three hours before I plugged the laptop for charging. This is lesser than what I observed on a few gaming machines, and is far below mainstream notebooks. However, considering that it is designed with folks working at a stationary desk and not mobile workforce in mind, I don’t see much reason to complain.

Watch: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon First Look

Software

The Lenovo ThinkPad E480 being a business-friendly laptop runs 64-bit Windows 10 Pro out of the box. It has little or no bloatware and most IT administrators can configure the machine using their own image. The laptop is designed to offer most convenient features for business users like remote desktop, device guard and bitlocker. It also supports additional system configuration like ability to join a domain or handle group policy management.

While Windows includes a number of native security features, the ThinkPad E480 includes its own security features including device encryption and TPM Chip. It also bundles an antivirus, but I’m certain most IT administrators will remove at as soon as the device gets shipped. Our review unit ran Windows 10 April Creators Update version 1803 and did not get updated to Fall Creators Update.

Verdict

There are only few devices or product built to do one thing well and the ThinkPad series is one such product. Whether you buy this entry-level ThinkPad or a more premium model like the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, you are guaranteed to get a clean software, reliable design and a build quality that can be described in one word as indestructible. With ThinkPad E480, Lenovo manages to offer most of that for a very much acceptable price of under Rs 55,000 but be prepared to carry a lot of weight on your back. Is this a good first-time enterprise notebook, the answer is absolutely.

Android Pie is still on less than 0.1 percent of devices worldwide

Although the latest version of Android, version 9 Pie, has been out for Google Pixel devices for nearly two months now, it’s widespread adoption remains slow. As such, even in the latest Android distribution numbers for the week ended September 28 aren’t registering Android 9 Pie, due to its total user base being under 0.1 percent of the total Android user base. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it continues to show that Android’s fragmented nature and dependence of manufacturers rolling out software support keeps adoption of the latest version low and slow.

According to the distribution numbers, Android Nougat remains the most popular version of Android by user numbers, accounting for 29.3 percent of the total users (spread over Android 7.0 and 7.1). Meanwhile, Android Marshmallow comes in second place at 21.6 percent, with last year’s Android Oreo (19.2 percent) in third and quickly gaining ground. And while Android 9 Pie is slowly reaching more users, it’s total user base is yet to hit the 0.1 percent mark where it appears in the chart.

Interestingly, Android Gingerbread, which was released nearly eight years ago in 2010, continues to register on the charts with 0.3 percent of all Android users still on the system. This would indicate that smartphones that are well over five years old are still functioning in the hands of users.

Android 9 Pie has seen slow adoption with only a handful of smartphone manufacturers having announced or implemented a roll-out of the latest version on their devices. Apart from the Pixel range, OnePlus has already rolled out Android 9 Pie in both open beta and stable versions for the OnePlus 6, while Nokia has also done the same for the Nokia 7 Plus.

While high-end devices could launch with the new OS out of the box in the coming months, for the time being getting Android Oreo onto more phones seems to be a more realistic target for Google. Android 9 gaining serious numbers could still be several months away, although it could finally start registering on the chart in the next couple of months.

Facebook to be fined $1.63 billion by European privacy regulators over data breach: Report

Facebook might get fined for $1.63 billion by European privacy regulators over latest data breach. The social networking giant on Friday admitted that hackers broke into nearly 50 million users’ accounts by stealing their ‘access tokens’ or ‘digital keys’.

This security lapse is considered as the biggest-ever security breach after Cambridge Analytica scandal. According to a WSJ report (via Fortune), European privacy regulators are considering up to $1.63 billion of fine on Facebook for this data breach.

Data Protection Commission (DPC) Ireland, which is the lead privacy regulator in Europe, is seeking more information from Facebook about the data breach’s scope. The DPC has also asked for information on users from Europe that were impacted in this breach.

The DPC in an email statement to WSJ said it is “concerned at the fact that this breach was discovered on Tuesday and affects many millions of user accounts but Facebook is unable to clarify the nature of the breach and the risk for users at this point.”

A Facebook spokeswoman has responded to Journal‘s report and said that Facebook will answer the DPC’s questions, as well as provide regulators with further updates.

Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has already reacted on the data breach and said “While I’m glad we found this, fixed the vulnerability, and secured the accounts that may be at risk, the reality is we need to continue developing new tools to prevent this from happening in the first place.”

The company has claimed that this vulnerability impacted users who used the site’s popular “View As” feature to see how their Facebook profile page looks to visitors, but none of the users’ passwords were revealed in the breach.

Reddit user accidentally buys unreleased 3rd generation Chromecast from Best Buy

Google is planning to launch its upcoming flagship Google Pixel 3 lineup at its annual hardware event in about ten days. Months before the official launch of the Google Pixel 3 devices, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL leaked out in extensive detail with some websites even purchasing the device from grey market to put out complete reviews. However, it looks like Pixel 3 lineup is not the only hardware that Google will launch at its October 9, 2018 event. It was expected that the company may launch the next generation of Pixel Book along with a new Chromecast but the new Chromecast launch has almost been confirmed.

According to a post on Reddit, it looks like the original poster was able to purchase an unreleased third generation Google Chromecast from Best Buy. The post included an image of the unreleased Chromecast alongside the second generation Chromecast. According to a report by GSMArena, it is likely that Best Buy accidentally placed the device on the shelves as while buying, the device was not part of the database. However, the customer had the device in his hand and the price was similar to the second generation device so the cashier billed him under the second generation model.

Watch: How Realme phones are made

The report noted fundamental design differences between the second generation and third generation Chromecast devices noting that the third generation one “comes in a thicker shell” along with a Google logo instead of the Chrome logo.

The device still sports a micro USB port and the HDMI connector does not magnetically attach itself to the main device. The form-factor seems similar to the second generation device so it is likely that major changes lie in the internal hardware. There are no additional details available about the 3rd generation Chromecast at the time of writing.

Intel defends itself against Qualcomm’s claims of ‘intellectual property theft’

Chip maker and electronics giant Intel has just issued a stern statement defending against the recent claims made by Qualcomm. Intel stated that it respects the intellectual property, but more than that, it respects “truth, candor and fair competition.” The company went all out by calling Qualcomm’s business operation as “unlawful ‘no license, no chips’ regime.” Intel also noted that that the anti-competitive practices by Qualcomm about licensing to have access to its chips have attracted fines worth $975 million in China, $850 million in South Korea, $1.2 billion in Europe, and $773 million in Taiwan. The response also noted that Qualcomm is under investigation in Japan and the United States for the anti-competitive practices.

Steven R Rodgers, the executive vice president and general counsel for Intel went on to add, “For the most part, we have chosen, and will continue to choose, to respond to Qualcomm’s statements in court, not in public.” He went on to refer the lawsuit this week were Qualcomm lost the case that involved 88 patent claims including on about the Intel modem. Rodgers also referred to how Qualcomm “publicly disparaged” the products by Intel asking judges to order the customers not to purchase Intel modems. He added that Intel has been working hard to “push the boundaries of computing and communication technologies” while standing by his engineers and employees.

Watch: Shadow of the Tomb Raider Gameplay

For context, Qualcomm accused Apple of stealing “vast swaths” of trade secrets and confidential information so that it could help improve the performance of the chips made and supplied by Intel.

The company amended its existing lawsuit against Apple claiming that it will the law take its own course instead of pushing Apple to settle the case.
