Google made a secret deal with Mastercard to check on your offline store shopping: Report
Google reportedly made a secret partnership with Mastercard in the U.S. to check whether its ads converted to a sale at a physical store or not. It paid Mastercard millions of dollars for the deal to access almost two billion Mastercard card-holders’ data. Citing unidentified people with knowledge of the deal, Bloomberg notes that select Google advertisers in the past year have had access to a tool that tracks whether whatever ads they ran online led to a sale at a physical store in the U.S.
The deal raises privacy concerns about how much consumer data is being taken without consent. Essentially, it gave Google an unprecedented asset for measuring retail spending, said report. The business partnership reportedly took about four years of negotiations, but Google never announced it publicly. There were apparently four people with knowledge of the deal and out of them three worked directly on it. It is also suggested that Google discussed sharing a portion of the ad revenue with the companies, however, a Google spokeswoman declined the reports of revenue sharing agreement with its partners.
Addressing the ads tool, the Google spokeswoman in a statement told Bloomberg, “Before we launched this beta product last year, we built a new, double-blind encryption technology that prevents both Google and our partners from viewing our respective users’ personally identifiable information.”
“We do not have access to any personal information from our partners’ credit and debit cards, nor do we share any personal information with our partners,” added the statement. While these reports need an explanation from Google and even further investigation from government agencies, one thing quite clear is that data privacy in this digital age is at utmost risk.

US President Donald Trump states Google, Facebook and Amazon to be in an antitrust situation
In a recent interview held on Thursday, USA President Donald Trump stated tech giants like Facebook, Google and Amazon to be in a “very antitrust situation”. However, the President did not comment further on whether he believes if these companies should be broken up, pertaining to the matter.
In an Oval office interview with Bloomberg, Donald Trump said, “I won’t comment on the breaking up, of whether it’s that or Amazon or Facebook,” further adding “As you know, many people think it is a very antitrust situation, the three of them. But I just, I won’t comment on that.”
This is the third day in a row that the US President has repeatedly accused the three companies of being biased against conservatives. He believes that their actions are aimed at belittling Conservative speech. His attack started on Tuesday, when Trump tweeted, “This is a very serious situation-will be addressed!” referring to his belief about Google’s new search being more in favor of the liberal community. Trump was later reported to add that Google, Facebook and Twitter , “are treading on very, very troubled territory.”
The assault continued Wednesday when Trump further tweeted a “#StopTheBias,” hashtag and posted a video, where he accused Google to promote former President Barack Obama’s State of Union addresses on its homepage but failed to do the same for his.
While Facebook and Amazon are yet to respond to these accusations, Google said in a statement that it did in fact promote Trump’s 2018 address but did not post a tout to either his or Obama’s speeches to Congress after they were first elected. Further the company defended its news searches saying that it is designed to give users relevant stories and does not favor any political agenda.
Not just Trump, similar accusations of being biased were also raised by Republican Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah. The conservative politician has asked the U.S. Federal Trade Commission Chairman Joseph Simons to re-examine Google’s conduct in search and digital advertising practices.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro in India could be powered by Snapdragon 660 SoC
After recently launching the Poco F1 smartphone in India, Xiaomi is all set to introduce the Redmi 6-series in India next week. These smartphones include the Redmi 6, Redmi 6A and the Redmi 6 Pro. At the same time, Xiaomi also seems to be working on the Redmi Note 6 Pro, a successor to the Redmi Note 5 Pro. Chipset details of the Redmi Note 6 Pro have surfaced.
According to a post on Weibo, spotted by MySmartPrice, the Redmi Note 6 Pro in India will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC with an octa-core CPU. It will be coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, and another variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. There is no word on the 6GB RAM with 64GB storage variant, but considering it was launched in India last year, the same could be expected this year too.

If indeed the Redmi Note 6 Pro comes with a Snapdragon 660 SoC, it will be a good upgrade as the Redmi Note 5 Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 636 SoC. The Redmi Note 6 Pro is also expected to come with a notched display with an aspect ratio of 19:9. There is currently no word on when Xiaomi plans to launch the smartphone.
To recap, Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 5 Pro in India at Rs 14,999 for the variant with 4GB RAM, whereas the 6GB RAM variant sets you back by Rs 16,999. It comes with a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display with an aspect ratio of 18:9.
As mentioned above, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 octa-core SoC, and available in two storage variants – both having 64GB storage, with 4GB or 6GB RAM options to choose from. In the photography department, the smartphone comes with a dual-camera setup at the back – with a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. Up front is a 20-megapixel sensor for selfies and video calling. With 4,000mAh battery to keep things ticking, the smartphone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo OS.

Samsung sent samples of foldable displays to Oppo and Xiaomi: Report
Apart from making its own smartphones, Samsung also supplies numerous hardware components (e.g. flash memory chips, display panels) to other companies for their devices. In fact, one of the chaebol’s subsidiaries – Samsung Display – is solely involved in the research, development, and manufacture of display panels for products such as smartphones and TVs.
Samsung has been rumoured to be working on a foldable smartphone for quite some time. Now, a report from ETNews has claimed that the company supplied samples of its foldable displays to two of China’s most-prominent smartphone manufacturers – Oppo and Xiaomi.
It may sound strange that the company is sending foldable displays to competitors even though its own product is not out yet, but apparently, there’s a rationale behind this move. It seems that the company wants to help the ecosystem of foldable smartphones grow and get customers acquainted with the new technology (and the devices it will bring), before unleashing its own smartphone with a foldable screen. If that is indeed the plan, this will also give Samsung time to burnish their own product, so that it stands a much better chance against established competition upon launch.

Whatever Samsung’s intentions may be, it’ll be interesting to see when we get to see the first foldable smartphones. Samsung recently took the wraps off its new Q900R QLED 8K TV at the ongoing IFA 2018 consumer electronics tradeshow in Berlin. The QLED display on Q900R, according to Samsung, features ‘Real 8K Resolution’, and can reach 4,000 nits of peak brightness. The feature allows the TV to produce four times more pixels than a 4K UHD TV, accounting for a total of more than 33 million pixels.
