Warren Buffett’s Bekshire Hathaway to invest in Paytm

Berkshire Hathaway, the investment firm run by billionaire Warren Buffett, is on the verge of buying a small stake in Indian finance-technology company One97 Communications Ltd, the parent company of Paytm. According to a report by Livemint, Berkshire Hathaway could buy about $350 million (Rs 2,500 crore approximately) in stake at a valuation of $10-12 billion (about a 3 percent stake). The talks have been on since February, and are likely to be concluded soon.

If true, this will be Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway’s first investment in an Indian company, and putting money into Paytm means that the legendary investor is betting big on online payment services and e-commerce in India, both of which Paytm is a large part of. Paytm’s online payments system gained massively right after the Government of India’s demonetization policy in late 2016, as users looked to online and cashless payments in the wake of widespread cash shortages.

Paytm currently remains privately held, and it will also be Berkshire Hathaway’s first investment in a privately held technology company. Other notable investments by the company include a large stake in Apple, which recently became the world’s first $1 trillion company by market capitalization. Warren Buffett’s leadership of Berkshire Hathaway and skilled investing have made him one of the richest people in the world.

Founded in 2000 by Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Paytm also has Japan’s Softbank Group and China’s Alibaba group as investors. Apart from its online payments system and payments bank, Paytm’s parent company One97 Communications also runs Paytm Mall, an e-commerce platform that rivals Amazon and Flipkart in India. The deal could be announced soon, and will bring in much-needed capital for Paytm to continue expanding its payments bank, mobile wallet and e-commerce operations.

Here’s how West Bengal government is combating ‘Momo Challenge’

Alarmed by the recent reports of two persons allegedly committing suicide in northern West Bengal after receiving invitations to join online killer game ‘Momo Challenge’, the state administration has started taking precautionary steps to combat the threat.

Besides sending directives to police stations in the districts, the administration has also asked educational institutes to keep a tab on the behavioural pattern of students, an official told PTI.

“It (Momo challenge) is growing everyday. After the Blue Whale challenge, now we are facing this killer Momo Game Challenge. Links of this ‘game’ is getting circulated mostly through WhatsApp. We have alerted officials in the district to keep a tab on this matter,” he said.

The killer ‘game’ features a creepy image of a girl with distorted face and eyes bulging out called the “Mother Bird by Link Factory”. It is alleged that the Momo Challenge has claimed lives of two persons at Kurseong in Darjeeling district — Manish Sarki (18) on August 20 and Aditi Goyal (26) the next day.

Police suspect that both of them were into the online killer game which led them to take the ultimate step. “It is a growing menace and we are getting reports of an increasing number of people, mostly youths, getting invitation on their WhatsApp from unidentified numbers to play the ‘game’,” the official said. Preliminary investigation has revealed that people who have shown the slightest of sign of depression or a desire to commit suicide were targeted, he said.

On August 21, Jalpaiguri resident Kabita Rai received an invitation to “play” the “death game”, following which she had lodged a police complaint, the official said, adding a college student from the district was detained in connection with the complaint. Another woman, an IT professional and a mother of an eight-year-old boy, in the state capital received a similar invitation, following which she approached the Kolkata Police cyber cell.

“I chose not to reply to the invitation as advised by one of my friends. On Thursday night I found the invitation on my WhatsApp. I knew about the ‘game’ and because I have a kid I was scared,” Rajashree Upadhyay said. The official said till date, most of the complaints were reported from Jalpaiguri, Kurseong, Paschim Medinipur districts, and it was only last week that one was reported from Kolkata.

“We have sought help from cyber experts on how to tackle the menace. A list of dos and don’ts have been shortlisted and sent for distribution in all districts to create awareness among people,” he said.

Cyber expert Sandeep Sengupta, the managing director of the Indian School of Ethical Hacking, said, “Administrators who are running the Game hack social media numbers of the players and blackmail them through other social networking sites.”

“They keep a tab on the status people post on social networking sites and choose those who are showing suicidal tendency for sending them an invite to play the game.”

Sengupta advised people not to accept any invitation to play the “game” from any unknown number and not to click on any unidentified link.

“Frequent change of password of email accounts and other social networking sites is necessary. People must be very cautious about their posts on those sites and once they get any invitation from any particular number on their WhatsApp, they must straightaway block it,” he said.

The official said once an invitation to play the killer game is received, people should immediately inform local police station.

“Parents in the northern districts as well as in other parts of the state are scared about the ‘Momo Challenge’. We want them to be alert and to keep an eye on what their wards are doing while being online through their mobile phones. They should be stopped from playing any sort of game which has a possibility to lead them to the ‘Momo Game Challenge’,” he said.

Educational institutes in all districts have been sent special requests to keep a eye on the students, the official said.

Reliance Jio is now India’s second largest telecom operator by revenue

Reliance Jio’s rise in the Indian telecom space can be considered nothing short of spectacular. The Mukesh Ambani-backed company took the competitors by surprise, forcing them to completely revamp their offerings in order to keep up with Reliance Jio’s lucrative combo data-voice packs.

Now, almost two years after it arrived on the scene, Jio has taken over Vodafone India as the country’s second largest telecom operator by revenue market share, inching ever so closer to market leader Bharti Airtel. This growth can be largely attributed to Jio’s strong performance in India’s rural markets, where its affordable data-voice offerings have left rivals struggling to keep up.

Watch: Oppo F9 Pro First Look

According to a report by Economic Times, Jio’s RMS (Revenue Market Share) increased by 253 basis points on-quarter to 22.4-percent at the end of June, based on data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. At the same time, Vodafone India’s RMS went down 175 basis points to 19.3-percent, and Idea Cellular’s RMS plunged 106 basis points to 15.4-percent.

As per Economic Times report, Jio also reported a 14-percent surge in its Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) to Rs 7,200 crore in the quarter that ended in June, while Vodafone India and Idea Cellular reported slumps of 7.1-percent and 5.2-percent to Rs 6,000 crore and Rs 5,200 crore, respectively.

Reliance Jio was recently ranked as the top company globally on Fortune’s ‘Change The World’ list, ranked companies using the profit motive to help the planet and tackle social problems.

“If access to the Internet is a basic human right — and the United Nations declared it one in the summer of 2016 — then Reliance Jio deserves more credit than most for expanding access to it,” Fortune said.

WhatsApp data stored on Google Drive won’t be end-to-end encrypted, updates company on website

Facebook-owned WhatsApp provides end-to-end encryption for messages within its chat app platform and that’s been a big highlight of the service, but unfortunately this security won’t work for your Google Drive backups. WhatsApp recently notified its users that the backup on Google Drive account won’t count against your storage quota, but now in an interesting development, the company has added an ‘important’ note on the website saying that the data stored in these backups on Google Drive won’t have end-to-end encryption.

As per the latest update on WhatsApp‘s website, “Media and messages you back up aren’t protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption while in Google Drive,” first spotted by ET. So what this essentially suggests is that once your data is stored in cloud (Google Drive) then it is more like that platform’s responsibility to protect the data. In WhatsApp’s case, the data within the WhatsApp platform will still be end-to-end encrypted.

WhatsApp has been very cautious about user data privacy and security. The company recently rejected the Indian government’s demand for a solution to track the origin of messages on its platform. It said that building traceability would undermine end-to-end encryption and affect privacy protection for users.

The company’s Head Chris Daniels met IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad last week, and after the meeting, Prasad had told reporters that the government has asked WhatsApp to set up a local corporate entity and find a technology solution to trace the origin of fake messages circulated through its platform as well as appoint a grievance officer.

Airtel vs Vodafone vs Reliance Jio: Best postpaid plans under Rs 500

Although most users in India would prefer prepaid plans for the flexibility and security of using only what you’ve already paid for, there are distinct benefits to going with a postpaid plan. Apart from the fact that you have the comfort of continuous usage on a postpaid plan, you also don’t have to worry about your connection stopping abruptly if you haven’t topped-up your connection.

And while postpaid plans have traditionally been expensive, today it’s possible to get a fully-loaded plan at under Rs 500 from any of the three major mobile operators in India – Airtel, Vodafone and Reliance Jio. Here is a list of the top postpaid plans under Rs 500 from the three big operators.

Airtel postpaid plans

Rs 399 Plan

The Rs 399 plan is the most affordable postpaid plan from Airtel currently, and offers unlimited voice calling (local + STD) as well on both the home network as well as when roaming within India. You also get 20GB of data per month (with roll over for unused data), and an additional 20GB of data per month for a year, bringing the total benefit up to 40GB per month. Users on this plan also get access to the Wynk Music service from Airtel.

Rs 499 Plan

The Rs 499 plan is the second plan from Airtel under Rs 500, and offers similar benefits of unlimited voice calls within India. Data benefits on this plan are higher at 75GB per month with unused data roll over, and users also get access to Wynk Music, Airtel TV and Airtel’s handset protection. Apart from this, users also get one year of Amazon Prime membership for free with the plan, provided they are not already Amazon Prime subscribers.

Vodafone postpaid plans

Rs 399 Plan

Vodafone too has a Rs 399 plan, which offers unlimited voice calls within India to Indian numbers. The plan also offers 40GB of data per month, with unused data up to 200GB rolling over. Users receive one year of Amazon Prime free with the plan (provided they are not already subscribers) along with access to Vodafone Play for one year. The plan also comes with a bill guarantee service, which will ensure that the bill is capped at a maximum amount so as to keep the bill amount in check. Users also get 100 SMS per month.

Rs 499 Plan

This plan from Vodafone offers identical benefits to the one from Airtel, with unlimited voice calls within India, and 75GB of data per month (with unused data rolling over up to 200GB). Users also get access to Vodafone Play and Amazon Prime, along with Mobile Shield, a mobile insurance scheme that provides damage repair, anti-virus and extended warranty on the user’s device. The bill guarantee can be activated on this plan as well. Users also get 100 SMS per month.

IFA 2018: What to expect from Samsung, Sony, LG, Huawei, Lenovo and others

Europe’s biggest consumer electronics show, IFA 2018, will be back in Berlin this week. The event, which takes place at Messe Berlin from August 31 to September 5, 2018 will see major product announcements from brands such as Samsung, LG, Huawei and others. Like every year in the past, core product announcements will be centered around consumer electronics so expect to see a number of large televisions, foldable laptops and possibly smartphones.

While CES sets the tone for consumer electronics industry and Mobile World Congress in February shapes the mobile world for a full year, IFA does not necessarily come with any such baggage. It is safe to say that the event has been unpredictable with surprise announcements happening in areas that you would not expect to see. BGR India will bring you all the latest developments from Europe’s biggest consumer electronics show. In the meantime, here is a look at what to expect from major tech brands:

Samsung at IFA 2018

Samsung has always been the big player at IFA 2018. In the past, the company has shown its Galaxy Note series and in the recent times, the Korean giant had turned IFA into a launchpad for its Gear fitness tracker and smartwatch. With Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Watch announced at New York early this month and Samsung revealing that details about the Galaxy Home smart speaker will be shared at Samsung Developer Conference, the action completely shifts to large-screen television and home appliances.

At IFA 2018, Samsung is widely rumored to launch 8K QLED TVs as the next major evolution of its TV lineup. The reports suggest that Samsung’s 8K TV will play a custom 8K video in a loop to show the details and colors produced by the new panel. With QLED technology, Samsung has been promising faster refresh rate, better contrast, deeper blacks and overall improvements to color reproduction. The 8K TV should not be much of an exception. Also, Samsung will try to woo the European consumers with its 146-inch 4K MicroLED-based the Wall TV.

LG at IFA 2018

For LG, IFA has been the turf to launch new V-series smartphone. With LG G7+ ThinQ coming in the late first half of 2018, LG might delay the launch of next V-series smartphone to later this year. The rumors so far indicate that LG is working on a new V-series device, likely to be named LG V40 ThinQ, with five cameras but leaks indicate that it will arrive late in fall. Whether LG will use IFA as the launchpad for V40 launch remains a guessing game for now.

However, it seems certain that LG will use the IFA 2018 show floor to introduce its 175-inch MicroLED TV. Yes, that TV will be much bigger that what Samsung is bringing to the show and it would be the perfect way to fight with its South Korean rival. Apart from smartphones and televisions, LG has also been building up its ecosystem of smart, connected devices lately.

The company has been teasing the introduction of a bunch of new devices as part of its ThinQ AI platform. There is a possibility of LG launching its own smart speaker with a display powered by Google Assistant and might introduce home robot with its own digital assistant. The possibilities are endless in this segment and LG might have some surprise element there.

Sony at IFA 2018

Sony has long held a tradition of launching at least two Xperia branded smartphones at IFA. This year, the company might bring only one smartphone to the show. With smartphones getting smaller and having larger display, the Japanese giant might be doing away with its Compact series. At IFA this year, Sony might launch the Xperia XZ3, the successor to Xperia XZ2 showcased at MWC 2018.

The Xperia XZ3 is expected to pick from where the Xperia XZ2 Premium left off. The leaked renders suggest it might end up being just a cheaper variant of the premium model. It is expected to be powered by Snapdragon 845 chipset, 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage. It will offer a single rear camera setup and fingerprint sensor located at dead center. It is not clear why Sony still makes smartphones and the Xperia XZ3 might not have any answer to that question.

Apart from smartphones, Sony is also expected to showcase new range of wireless smart speakers for the global market. It might announce new range of truly wireless earbuds along with new range of speakers, both wired and wireless.

Huawei at IFA 2018

IFA 2018 might just end up being the year of Huawei, a Chinese company with global ambitions and ability to even dethrone Apple as second major smartphone brand. With Samsung not planning anything big, Huawei could throw all its hats and launch the Mate 20 series.

The Mate 20 series has been part of a number of leaks in the past few weeks and its launch at IFA 2018 seems imminent. The Mate 20 series is expected to include three devices – Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 Lite. The Mate 20 Lite, the cheaper of the three models, is rumored to feature teardrop style notch similar to Essential Phone. The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro, on the other hand, are expected to feature a wider notch like iPhone X, to enable 3D facial recognition.

In the past, Huawei has scheduled a separate launch event for the Mate series and that might hold true for this year. However, Huawei is confirmed to reveal Kirin 980, its next-generation mobile chipset. The Kirin 980 is dubbed to be the first commercial mobile chipset based on 7nm process. The chipset should be much more powerful than Kirin 970 and also highly battery efficient.

Huawei CEO has already confirmed that Kirin 980 will include second-generation Neural Processing Unit and will power the upcoming Mate 20 series. There are also possibilities of Huawei filling the void left by Samsung and launch third-generation Huawei Watch at the event.

Lenovo at IFA 2018

Lenovo has always been one of the big names at IFA, despite not offering products in the segment like smartphones. At IFA this year, Lenovo is widely anticipated to launch the Yoga 930, its successor to Yoga 920. The laptop is rumored to be a convertible with watchband hinge and pack more powerful Intel’s 8th generation H-series CPU.

The company recently announced the ThinkPad P1, its 15.6-inch thin and lightweight laptop for business users. At the event, Lenovo might show the device to compete with Dell’s excellent XPS 13. Last year, Lenovo used the event to show its VR devices and at this year’s event, there is a possibility of hearing more about company’s Mirage Solo VR headset.

Motorola is not a big fixture at IFA but with parent company Lenovo launching new products, Moto might announce new smartphones. The company is rumored to be preparing to launch Motorola Moto One and Moto One Power smartphones at the event. The Moto One and One Power will be first Android-One based smartphones and could be priced lower.

BlackBerry at IFA 2018

BlackBerry is definitely launching a new smartphone at IFA 2018 this week. The company has officially revealed the teaser for what looks like the Key2 LE. The rumors so far indicate that Key2 LE will be a cheaper version of the Key2 but offer the same physical QWERTY keyboard.

Alexa and Google Assistant everywhere at IFA 2018

Every major tech company is aiming to takeover smart and connected device segment. However, in order to create a smart device, developers need to support either Alexa or Google Assistant. At IFA 2018, expect to see a wide array of smart wireless speakers with support for either Alexa or Google Assistant or both.

These digital assistants can also be seen inside home appliances ranging from refrigerators to wireless routers. Whether you like Alexa or Google Assistant, they are coming to every other device in your household.

Watch: Samsung Galaxy Note 9 First Look

Wearables at IFA 2018

Samsung Galaxy Watch may not be a big attraction at IFA this year but Fitbit and Fossil might emerge as big names at the event. Fitbit recently announced the Charge 3 and at IFA 2018, the company might showcase the device.

In terms of wearables, mainstream watchmaker like Fossil might have one or two smartwatch to show off at the event. With Google having revamped its Fit app for Wear OS, these companies might show updated design and ease of use on a new range of smartwatches. Huawei might launch the Huawei Watch 3 while LG might debut a new smartwatch to help Google spread a word about Wear OS.

Others at IFA 2018

IFA is a place for every kind of consumer electronics and this year will be no different. At IFA 2018, Acer and Asus are expected to show their new powerful gaming machines, which might include the new NVIDIA RTX 2080 GPU for ray tracing. They are also expected to show new platform developments coming to Windows Mixed Reality for immersive VR experience. Panasonic and Philips are expected to show new home electronics while RHA is expected to launch world’s first planar magnetic wireless earphones.

Sir Donald George Bradman, cricket legend, commemorated in Google doodle

The overall appearance of Google’s homepage is, and always has been, quite minimalistic. However, over the years, it’s also become synonymous with ‘Google Doodles,’ specially-designed variations of Google’s logo that are temporarily put up to mark special events and honour prominent personalities from across the world.

Continuing that tradition, the latest Google Doodle commemorates the 110th birthday of Australian cricketing icon Sir Donald George Bradman.

Watch: Poco F1 Armoured Edition First Look

The doodle isn’t animated or interactive. Instead, it just features a colour caricature of Donald Bradman hitting a ball away with the swing of his bat, set against the backdrop of what appears to be a tapered cricket pitch. The word ‘GOOGLE’ is written on the pitch, with the first ‘O’ hidden behind Bradman’s caricature.

Using a share icon on the bottom right corner, users can easily share the doodle with others over email, direct link, Facebook, and Twitter.

Often referred to as ‘The Don,’ Sir Donald George Bradman is widely acknowledged as the greatest batsman of all time. His career test batting average of 99.94 is frequently cited as the greatest achievement by any sportsman in any major sport.

Bradman made his first-class debut in 1927, when he was 19 years old. Playing for New South Wales (NSW) against Adelaide, he scored a century (118 runs).

Recently, Google marked the 107th birthday of Indian Urdu-language writer Ismat Chugtai. The outspoken Chugtai was known for championing free speech, social liberation, and gender equality through her writings.

Google’s doodle for commemorating India’s 72nd Independence Day was quite intricately-designed, featuring ‘truck art’ seen on trucks throughout the country.
