The device logged a model number SKW-A0, and likely come with 27W fast-charging support, just like the Mi 9.

Rumors have also pointed out that unlike the predecessor, the new smartphone will come with a big, bezel-less display. There is also a possibility where the smartphone may come with 12GB of RAM. Moving on, the smartphone is expected to run Android 9 Pie OS out-the-box.

Windows Lite is real; likely to be aimed at Chromebook-like laptops, dual-screen devices

New information spotted online has confirmed previous reports about the existence of Windows Lite. According to reports, the presence of a Lite version for Windows has been confirmed along with why Microsoft is making such a move. Diving into the details, the company is making this version to target Chromebook-like devices along with upcoming dual-screen devices. The report revealed that such devices may launch in the market later this year. Though that depends on how ready the PC and chip makers are.

Talking about the “Windows Lite” version. essentially it is “a more stripped-down version of Windows” that has been prioritized for devices with two screens. This is in line with the new hardware lineup that Intel has been trying to create with other OEMs as noted in a report by The Verge. According to the report, it is likely that future devices may look like the much-rumored Courier along with dual screen laptops or even any with a foldable display as we saw in a number of devices at Mobile World Congress 2019.

Watch: Snapdragon 8cx Always Connected PCs

Even though the devices are not ready, it looks like the company wants to be ready for the future of computing devices. As part of building Windows Lite, the company is also working on Composable Shell or C-Shell along with Windows Core OS, a more modular version of the current Windows Shell. The modular version is currently powering Windows on new devices including HoloLens 2, and the upcoming Surface Hub 2X.

According to the report, the interface of the Windows Lite will be somewhat similar to what we see on the full version of Windows. Though, it will also look similar to the interface on the Surface Hub shell along with the functionality from the Windows Phone Continuum UI. Though it is possible that the interface may undergo significant changes before the final version.

Panasonic Eluga Ray 800 launched in India, priced at Rs 9,999: Specifications, features

Though Panasonic hasn’t been very active in the smartphone space, it hasn’t completely given up either. After launching the Eluga Ray 600 back in October last year, the company has today launched a new device, dubbed Eluga Ray 800. The smartphone is priced at Rs 9,999, and it is being made available across multiple e-commerce sites and offline retail channels.

Panasonic Eluga Ray 800 features, specifications

The current trend in the space is to launch devices with tall bezel-less displays. Yet Panasonic has launched a device with a design that feels quite dated. The Eluga Ray 800 features a metallic body with a more traditional 16:9 aspect ratio.

As far as specifications and features are concerned, the Eluga Ray 800 sports a 5.5-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) display with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. Under the hood is an unspecified octa-core chipset paired with 4GB of RAM. There is 64GB internal storage on offer, which can be expanded up to 128GB using a microSD card.

Even in the photography department, the Eluga Ray 800 feels a tad dated when compared to its rivals. At the back is a 13-megapixel autofocus primary sensor, while at the front there is an 8-megapixel selfie snapper accompanied by a LED flash.

Watch: Samsung Galaxy M10 & M20 First Look

Making sure everything ticks is a decent 4,000mAh battery, and for security, there’s a fingerprint sensor on the front. Connectivity options include dual-SIM card slots, 4G VoLTE support, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth- BT4.2, and OTG support. If you thought the design was old, the Eluga Ray 800 runs an outdated Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box. Also built-in is Panasonic’s trademark AI assistant called Arbo Hub – the ‘Go-to’ app for all the user needs.

On paper, Panasonic seems like a generation late in introducing the Eluga Ray 800. Despite the relatively low price tag, the smartphone feels outdated and grossly inadequate when you consider the other devices that are on offer. At this price point, the benchmarks are being set by the likes of Realme 3 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 that are way ahead in every possible sense.

Google’s team exposes ‘high severity’ flaw in macOS kernel; Apple accepts the flaw

Google’s Project Zero team has exposed a “high severity” flaw in macOS’ kernel. The team of Google usually reveals the bugs and security flaws within systems of Google, as well as for some other big companies. Last year, the team had revealed vulnerabilities in Microsoft’s Windows 10 S and Microsoft Edge browser.

Google detailed about the flaw in Apple’s macOS kernel on its Chromium bug tracker (via Neowin) last week noting that it was first disclosed to Apple back in November 2018. The company has a policy of reporting the bug privately to the manufacturers, and later the bug gets disclosed publicly after 90 days.

It is noted that a security researcher from Google’s Project Zero discovered a bug in macOS’ kernel, XNU. The bug states if a modification is made to a user-owned mounted filesystem image, the virtual management system isn’t notified of those changes. Which means that an attacker can potentially take malicious actions without the mounted filesystem knowing about it.

“XNU has various interfaces that permit creating copy-on-write copies of data between processes, including out-of-line message descriptors in mach messages. It is important that the copied memory is protected against later modifications by the source process; otherwise, the source process might be able to exploit double-reads in the destination process.

This copy-on-write behavior works not only with anonymous memory, but also with file mappings. This means that, after the destination process has started reading from the transferred memory area, memory pressure can cause the pages holding the transferred memory to be evicted from the page cache. Later, when the evicted pages are needed again, they can be reloaded from the backing filesystem,” noted Google on Chromium bug tracker.

Meanwhile, Apple has also acknowledged the issue reported by Google’s Project Zero team. The company has started working on a fix and intends to patch the issue in a future macOS release, although there is no timeline available on that just yet.

World Wide Web Consortium approves WebAuthn as the internet moves towards a password-free future

A new report has revealed a significant development for the technology world. As part of the report, the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) has just approved the WebAuthn API, a new standard for authentication that is likely to gradually replace passwords to be the only means of authentication across multiple websites and services. As noted by the report, this new API is already supported by major web browsers including Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Apple Safari. Now that W3C has approved the API as an official web standard, it is likely that more websites will start adapting WebAuthn for authentication.

According to a report by The Verge, any website that supports the API can use WebAuthn to communicate with any specified security device to allow users to log into any given service. The type of security device has not been specified and it can range from a normal FIDO security key to a sophisticated biometric device such as a fingerprint scanner. These methods will help users by providing them with an additional layer of verification to log in to the service or website of their choice.

Watch: Samsung Galaxy S10 Series First Look

If an increasing number of users start using this API then this authentication process is still “more secure” than most of the passwords that a majority of internet users use to protect their services. Another benefit of this authentication method is that users will no longer need to keep on remembering long complicated strings of passwords which could mean that passwords may gradually be on their way out.

A number of websites are already supporting this new API including Dropbox and Microsoft with more to soon join the wagon. According to the official announcement, Jeff Jaffe, the CEO for W3C issued a statement adding, “Now is the time for web services and businesses to adopt WebAuthn to move beyond vulnerable passwords and help web users improve the security of their online experiences.”

Honor teases new Tab 5 variant with an 8-inch screen; tipping launch is imminent

The device comes with 3GB RAM/32GB storage variant and 4GB/64GB configuration. With this device, users also get Huawei’s GPU Turbo technology for better gaming performance. Huawei slider smartphone with dual front cameras reportedly in the works

After years of working on regular rectangular smartphones, an increasing number of smartphone makers are now experimenting with the designs of their devices. Most of these experiments are aimed at eliminating the display notch style that has been adapted over the last two years. In the quest to do away with this design trend, device makers invented a number of different ways including manual or motorized slider design, dual display smartphones or punch hole cameras. As part of the effort, it looks like Chinese electronics giant and smartphone maker Huawei may be working on a new smartphone with a slider design.

This comes right after a report by LetsGoDigital uncovered a patent application of a smartphone design with the slider. According to the patent, the device will come with a dual front camera setup hidden inside the slider. This is a departure from the punch hole camera design that the company was pushing for in its devices. According to GizmoChina, the fact that the company is going for slider design smartphones is not surprising as its sub-brand Honor has already launched a device with a similar form factor.

Watch: Honor 10 Lite First Look

According to the report, the patent for the design was posted online as part of the Global Design Database of the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) by Huawei showcasing a slider along with two cameras on the front. This frees the front of the device to have an all screen display without the need for any compromises including the punch hole display to accommodate the front camera sensor.

The design also states that the dual camera setup on the front will come with a dedicated LED flash unit in the middle, which matches the camera set up on the back. The report also noted that there will be no fingerprint scanner on the back of the device which likely means that either it is under the screen or it is part of the power button.

Won’t offer higher margins to offline retailers at the cost of customers: Realme

Smartphone maker Realme Monday said it would not offer higher margins, which affect prices for end-customers, to brick-and-mortar retailers, even if the decision may result in slower offline sales for the brand. The company, which spun off as an independent entity from Chinese smartphone major OPPO, said it continues to scout for offline retail partners that are “customer-centric”.

“We look for partners who are more user-centric. We cannot offer higher margins at the cost of users. It’s a brand ethos, we can’t offer a product on differential margins and that is why we are selecting partners who think like us. Because of this, our offline expansion may be slow, but it will be gradual and strong,” Realme India Chief Executive Officer Madhav Sheth told PTI.

He added that in less than a year of operations, the company already has a presence in more than 35 cities at over 3,000 retail outlets. Realme also sells its devices online through Flipkart, Amazon, as well as its own website. Reports had suggested that offline retailers, including large chains like Reliance Retail, are refusing to sell Realme smartphones on account of low margins offered by the handset maker.

Sheth said the company is not rushing to shore up sales through offline channel, which accounts for about 20 per cent of the sales. “LFRs (large format retail stores) contribute to about 10 per cent in the country’s sales and if we go with them, we will definitely see a 10 per cent increase. But we cannot compromise on the cost for a user by giving them (offline retailers) margins at the cost of the customer,” Sheth said. He added that the company offers the same margins to offline retailers as it does to online.

Realme, which has sold over 5 million units in India so far, on Monday launched its latest offering – Realme 3 for Rs 8,999 onwards. The device features 6.2-inch display, MediaTek Helio P70 chipset, 13MP+2MP dual rear and 13MP front camera, and 4,230 mAh battery. It also includes a rider mode, which when enabled switches off notifications and allows calls only from selected contacts. The company will unveil a Realme 3 ‘Pro’ version next month.

According to IDC, Realme broke into the top 5 smartphone companies tally in the December 2018 quarter, securing the fourth spot with 7.5 per cent share. Xiaomi led the market with 28.9 per cent share, followed by Samsung (18.7 per cent) and Vivo (9.7 per cent) in the said quarter that saw a total shipment of 36.3 million units.

HTC in talks with Micromax, Lava and Karbonn for brand licensing in India: Report

Taiwanese smartphone company HTC is reportedly seeking a brand licensing deal to make a comeback in India. According to ET, three senior industry executives have suggested that HTC is in talks with Micromax, Lava and Karbonn to return to the Indian market.

HTC is looking to license its brand out to smartphone makers in India, and in turn wants to earn royalty in return. The smartphone company is said to be in advance stages of discussions with Lava and Karbonn, who will team up to bid for the HTC brand license, one of the executive was quoted as saying. “Since HTC used to operate in the Rs 10,000-plus segment, the brand will help the Indian smartphone makers re-enter this price segment, which is now the fastest-growing with intense competition among Xiaomi, Samsung, Oppo and Vivo,” one of the executives told ET.

While Lava, Karbonn or even Micromax didn’t officially said anything on the report, one HTC spokesperson confirmed that company is looking at strategic options for India market. “We will have more to announce at a later date,” the spokesperson told ET.

Last year, HTC dismissed speculations of its exit from the mobile market. It instead told everyone that it would continue to strengthen product portfolio by launching new smartphones in 2019. At present, HTC has almost zero market share in India. Once a dominant force in the world’s smartphone market, HTC has been confined to the sidelines for quite some time now. Even though the Taiwanese company continues to maintain some presence in the mobile space, its smartphones no longer command the attention that they once used to.

Most Indian users unaware how to report abuse: Twitter

Not many Twitter users in India are aware of how to report abuse or harassment they face on the open communication platform, opting for the wrong way of posting an abusive photo or tweet and then requesting us to take action, says Colin Crowell, Global Vice President of Public Policy of Twitter. There have been several incidents in the recent past where Twitter users in India, including journalists, posted abusive posts on their accounts, asking Twitter to take immediate action.

“One of the things we note in India is under-reporting of such issues. Users might take a screenshot of abuse or harassment they have been subjected to on Twitter, and say see, here is what has occurred to me. But they do not report that to us,” Crowell told IANS. “Our team can only take action if the issue is reported to us. Twitter serves over 500 million tweets a day and we do not read all of those. So reporting abuse to us is incredibly important,” Crowell added.

Users can report abusive behavior directly from a Tweet, profile or Direct Message. Multiple Tweets can be included in the same report to help Twitter gain better context while investigating the issues to get those resolved faster. “We have given additional tools to users to help them navigate through the service and keep themselves secure.

“There are additional ways to navigate to see tools and settings around notifications before you can mute a keyword or a conversation. You can report fake accounts or impersonation to us,” Crowell informed. Not many of these tools are known to Twitter users in India. “We would love to continue to educate them,” he added. On a question whether the 2016 US Presidential election has taught Twitter how to deal better with political interference on its platform, Crowell said the experience made them aware of the tactics nation-states may be used to manipulate the platform for the upcoming India elections.

“We learned a lot as an industry and received a thorough perspective on what happened during the 2016 US elections when it comes to foreign interference. “We have incorporated those insights during Mexico, Brazil and US mid-term elections. The same insights we will apply for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in India,” the Twitter executive said.

Millions of new voters will exercise their franchise for the first time so “we are trying to convey relevant voting information to them,” noted Crowell who appearing before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology on February 25 to help address issues such as political bias and manipulation on its platform.

Samsung Galaxy S10 AMOLED screen is the best yet: DisplayMate

It’s pretty well known that Samsung supplies its AMOLED display panels to some of the biggest players in the smartphone industry. The South Korean giant is known for its outstanding quality in making these OLED screens and the company’s latest flagship, the Galaxy S10 has the best one, as per a report by well-known display testing organization DisplayMate.

The Galaxy S10 has received the highest ever A+ rating from the organization making it the highest rated display on the market right now. The new rating means that the new Galaxy S10 carries on the legacy of its predecessors, which also received heavy praise for their great quality. As per Dr Raymond M. Soneira, a tester at DisplayMate, not only does the Galaxy S10 have the highest color accuracy, but it also has the highest brightness levels of any phone. Showering praises on the color accuracy of the Galaxy S10, Soneira said Samsung’s OLED was “the most color accurate display we have ever measured”. The new flagship also improves on several aspects from last year’s model including viewing angles, blue light spectrum and display power efficiency, concludes the report. The DisplayMate test also showed the Galaxy S10 panel to have the largest native color gamut and the lowest screen reflectance all of which add to the excellence of the AMOLED panel’s quality.

Both the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ have similar displays with differences mostly coming in size. Facebook security feature revealed users’ phone number to others

Facebook is facing backlash over its secure login process two-factor authentication (2FA) where it asked users to add phone numbers, which can be searched by advertisers. The security feature — meant solely to authenticate your identity on the social media platform – may have left your phone number open for others to see, even to advertisers to bombard you with their ads, USA Today reported on Monday.

The debate was initiated by Jeremy Burge, who runs the website Emojipedia, saying numbers added to use two-factor authentication were now searchable. “Facebook 2FA numbers are also shared with Instagram which prompts you ‘is this your phone number?’ once you add to FB. WhatsApp also shares phone numbers with Facebook. Facebook shares phone numbers with advertisers,” said Burge in a series of tweets.

“For years Facebook claimed… adding a phone number for 2FA was only for security. Now it can be searched and there’s no way to disable that,” Burge added. Last September, Gizmodo reported that Facebook also uses security information to target adverts. In a statement to the Guardian, Facebook said it has been receiving questions about two-factor authentication and phone number settings on Facebook.

“Two-factor authentication is an important security feature, and last year we added the option to set it up for your account without registering a phone number. Separately, the ‘Who can look me up?’ settings are not new and are not specific to two-factor authentication, the statement read.

“In April 2018, we removed the ability to enter another person’s phone number or email address into the Facebook search bar to help find someone’s profile.” The 2FA security practice also drew criticism from Facebook’s former chief information security officer Alex Stamos. Facebook “can’t credibly require 2FA for high-risk accounts without segmenting that from search and ads”, Stamos tweeted.

Lego reveals its own foldable product to take on the Samsung Galaxy Fold

Lego Group, the Danish company that is responsible for world popular Lego toys just posted a surprise teaser on its official Twitter handle. As part of the teaser, the company went about trolling the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the recently revealed foldable smartphone from the South Korea electronics and smartphone giant Samsung. The teaser tweet came with a caption revealing some important points about the upcoming competing product from the toy maker. According to the caption, the device comes with “a stunning 5-inch cover display” while completing the trolling by revealing that it isn’t a rival foldable smartphone.

Instead, the company put all this effort to advertise its new “11-inch pop-up storybook” that is about 5-inch in size in the folded state. The second line of the caption pushes the trolling attempt further by stating that the device is aimed for “creative play that never runs out of battery” comparing the storybook with a smartphone.

Watch: Samsung Galaxy Fold First Look

Taking into account the parameters of unfolded state and the battery life, the Lego Fold manages to beat the Samsung Galaxy Fold easily with the Lego Fold transforming from 5-inch to 11-inch storybook along with as previously mentioned, a battery “that never runs out”. It is refreshing to see a toy maker regain the higher ground in the world where smartphones and tablets are rapidly replacing toys as the primary source of entertainment for kids.

A report by The Verge goes on to compare both the products in other aspects including the build quality, operating system, and the pricing. As noted in the report, the Samsung Galaxy Fold manages to win in the build section along with Android 9 Pie actually being a more capable platform than what we know as the Lego platform. Talking about the pricing, the Lego Fold at its $69.99 price tag wins hands down against the Galaxy Fold with a price tag of about $2,000.
