Samsung Galaxy S10 users cannot remap the Bixby button to Google Assistant; here is the solution

Samsung launched its latest Galaxy S10 lineup about a week back at an event in San Francisco. After the event, everyone focused on the new features and technologies that came with the new devices. In addition to these, everyone also took note of a new addition to an existing feature, the Bixby button. As previously reported, Samsung has now introduced the ability for users to remap the existing Bixby button on the Galaxy S10 devices. The company also revealed that it will soon roll out the update to its previous flagship smartphones including Samsung Galaxy S8, S8, Galaxy Note 8, and Galaxy Note 9.

The company stated that the remap ability was coming soon with a future update to the Galaxy S10 devices. Now just about a week after the announcement, the company started rolling out a new update to the Galaxy S10 lineup with the remapping ability. However, XDA states that Samsung does not really allow its users to map the button to Google Assistant, Microsoft Cortana, or Amazon Alexa. This clearly means that the company does not want users to switch to rival digital assistants with the help of a dedicated button on its Galaxy S and Galaxy Note devices.

Watch: Samsung Galaxy S10 Series First Look

Moving further, users can map the button with any other app or set of actions. The selective treatment of apps was initially spotted by The Verge. However, XDA has figured out a way to bypass this with the help of a script from Tasker. According to the report, the Tasker script was converted into a dedicated Android app. Samsung Galaxy S10 lineup and other past Galaxy S and Galaxy Note users can use this Android app to remap the Bixby button.

As noted in the report, users need to map the button to use this app and then select the virtual digital assistant of their choice when the press the Bixby button. Users can get the app from this given link bit.ly/2XyCE7s, and install it on their device. To begin the remapping process, users need to go to the “Bixby Voice Settings” and then select the “Bixby key”. Once there, select the “Double press to open Bixby” and then select “Use single press” option.

After selecting this, tap on the gear icon and find “Bixby Button Assistant Remapper” from the options and select it. The last step is to press the physical Bixby button and then selecting the virtual digital assistant of your choice from the options. It should be noted that you still can’t completely do away from Bixby as the remapping tool simply provides two states of the button, the single press, and the double press.

Smartphones to aid disease diagnoses in remote areas

Smartphones can aid healthcare workers to diagnose, track and control infectious diseases in low-income countries, a study has suggested. Smartphones could also help people to test themselves and get results making it easier for them to look after their health, particularly in rural areas where clinics are far away, said the study. People can make use of apps that employ the phone’s camera to interpret test results, send them to local clinics or healthcare workers before being uploaded to a central online database.

The apps can also host virtual follow-up appointments with healthcare workers, according to the study published in the journal Nature. “By developing mobile health interventions, we address a number of challenges in healthcare and public education. Connected diagnostic tests for diseases have the ability to improve and build on these in new and exciting ways,” said Chris Wood from Imperial College London.

In addition, patients worried about a potential HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection might be more inclined to get tested if they could do it at home and avoid the stigma of attending a clinic. As global smartphone adoption is predicted to keep growing, safety measures must be put in place to protect the privacy and confidentiality of patient data, the team said.

Realme 3 key specifications, features confirmed by Flipkart ahead of March 4 launch

With the launch of the Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro yesterday, Xiaomi is all but certain to again set new benchmarks in the sub-Rs 20,000 segment. But competition will be fierce, and rivals are already upping their game, especially Realme. The former Oppo subsidiary seems quite confident about its upcoming Realme 3, and is already teasing the highlight features on Flipkart.

Flipkart has created a microsite ahead of the launch of the Realme 3 next week on March 4. Besides revealing the launch event date and time, the microsite highlights some of the key features along with reasons that make the upcoming device better than its immediate rivals.

Realme 3 key features teased

The first feature revealed is the processor under the hood. In line with previous rumors, the Realme 3 will be powered by a MediaTek Helio P70 SoC built on the 12nm process. The companies take a swipe at the Redmi Note 7, which is powered by a 14nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC.

The next feature to be highlighted is the notch on top of the display. It is revealed that the Realme 3 will feature a waterdrop or “dew drop” display notch. Also revealed is the 4,230mAh battery, which incidentally is bigger than the 4,000mAh unit powering the Redmi Note 7.

Realme 3 rumored specifications, features

Besides the above-mentioned features, the Realme 3 is also expected to come with up to 6GB RAM, up to 128GB internal storage, and run Android Pie out-of-the-box wrapped under ColorOS 6.0.

If rumors are to be believed, Realme is set to emulate Xiaomi’s product strategy. Essentially, the company could launch a Realme 3 Pro variant along with the Realme 3 on March 4. Just like the Redmi Note 7 Pro, the Realme 3 Pro variant could also come with a 48-megapixel snapper at the back. These are however just rumors, and we would advise you to take it with the proverbial pinch of salt.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 fails the bend and durability test

The Redmi Note 7 has been one of the highly anticipated affordable smartphones from Xiaomi as it brings a number of improvements over the predecessor while maintaining under Rs 10,000 price tag. Soon after the China launch, the company had been posting videos where the Redmi Note 7 was thrown down the stairs, used as skates, cutting board, and also used for smashing walnuts. While the smartphone survived those tests, it failed the real-life bend and durability test.

YouTuber JerryRigEverything is well known for putting the latest smartphones through a number of durability tests, and in the latest video, he put the Redmi Note 7 through the paces. The test revealed some weak spots around the power key and next to SIM tray. The plastic frame is weak too, and if you happen to keep the phone in your back pocket, and sit on it, the device might accidentally bend making the display useless.

Watch: Redmi Note 7 durability test

The back of the smartphone is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, along with an extra layer. However, even that didn’t help the glass from shattering into pieces. The Redmi Note 7 comes with water repellent coating, and the SIM card tray has a rubber seal to ensure the water doesn’t go inside and damage the internal components. Here, the YouTuber pointed out that the rubber seal is quite flimsy and snapped while ejecting the SIM tray. You’ll need to be careful when removing or replacing the SIM card.

The Redmi Note 7 is priced at Rs 9,999 for the 3GB RAM with 32GB storage variant, and Rs 11,999 for the 4GB RAM with 64GB storage variant. The smartphone comes with a dual camera setup, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC, 4,00mAh battery and more. It runs Android Pie OS out of the box with MIUI skin on top. The smartphone will go on sale in India starting March 6.

As part of the program, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 users will be able to opt-in to get access to the Beta version of Android 9 Pie-based update for the device. Apple Watch leads global smartwatch market with 51% share in Q4 2018

Apple captured 51 per cent share of a record 18 million smartwatch shipments worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2018, a new report has said.

The global smartwatch shipments hit an all-time high of 45 million units in 2018, said the market research firm Strategy Analytics on Wednesday.

Apple shipped 9.2 million smartwatches globally in Q4 2018 — rising 18 per cent from 7.8 million units in Q4 2017.

At second place, Samsung shipped 2.4 million smartwatches worldwide and captured 13 per cent global share, rising strongly from five per cent market share a year ago.

Fitbit captured 13 per cent global smartwatch market share in Q4 2018, tripling from four percent in Q4 2017.

“Combined together, Apple, Samsung, Fitbit and Garmin are the big four players, accounting for 8 in 10 of all smartwatches shipped worldwide,” Mawston added.

According to Steven Waltzer, Industry Analyst at Strategy Analytics, Samsung is once again the world’s second largest smartwatch brand.

“Its new Galaxy Watch proved popular in North America and Asia,” he added.

“Smartwatch growth is soaring, as consumers seek to accessorize their smartphones and bring digital connectivity to their wrists,” he added.

OnePlus plans up to 5-fold increase in headcount at India R&D centre

Premium smartphone maker OnePlus plans to increase headcount at its R&D centre in India by up to five-folds as it looks to make the facility its largest globally in the next three years. The research and development centre has an employee strength of 100 at present.

“We have recently opened up OnePlus R&D centre in Hyderabad. This will become OnePlus largest centre globally in the next three years. Looking forward to India R&D centre, you can expect 300-500 people to be part of the team, OnePlus Founder and CEO Pete Lau told PTI. India is one of the largest markets for OnePlus accounting for around 33 per cent of its global revenue, Lau said.

According to Counterpoint Market Research, OnePlus emerged as the best-selling premium smartphone brand of 2018 and also led the premium smartphone segment (priced over Rs 30,000 a unit) for three consecutive quarters capturing 36 per cent of the market in October-December 2018.

Lau said that the company will be among the first to launch 5G smartphones globally in the second quarter and look for availability of the next generation networks in India at the earliest.

The company would also be part of 5G trials in India in partnership with chipset maker Qualcomm.

He said that OnePlus is looking to scale up manufacturing in India as per business requirement and at the same time encouraging component makers and other supply chain vendors of its premium smartphones to set up base in India.

As the largest OEM (original equipment maker) in the premium segment, we very much want to and see ourselves as having influence to help bring supply chain for build out of premium flagship devices to make that supply chain more complete. That’s good for OnePlus and India and the entire industry. As our supply chain is further developed, we will then be interested in exploring the opportunity for export,” Lau said.

OnePlus currently uses Oppo Mobiles factory to manufacture its devices in India and claims to be manufacturing all devices locally that are sold in India.

When asked about expected growth in India and the company’s plan around encashing growth projections with the advent of 5G, Lau said Growth is not something which we don’t forecast but it is a result of performance and action. We haven’t planned for the set amount of growth in India but we have been a success in India. A Counterpoint report said that OnePlus was also the fastest growing premium smartphone brands annually, growing at 85. Per cent year-on-year driving the growth of the entire premium smartphone segment.

Samsung Galaxy A30, Galaxy A50 First Impressions: Mid-rangers with premium features

Chinese smartphone makers such as Xiaomi, Realme and Honor have been aggressive with their entry-level and mid-range offering, so much that it caused a good dent in Samsung’s market share. And after staying quiet for long, 2019 is different where Samsung is on a road to redemption. Just two months into the new year, the company has already launched nine smartphones – three each in M-series, A-series, and the Galaxy S10-series.

Talking about the Galaxy A-series that was launched at an event in Mumbai earlier today, you have the entry-level A10 priced at Rs 8,490, and the mid-range Galaxy A30 priced at Rs 16,990. Then there is also the Galaxy A50, which is currently the premium offering in the series priced at Rs 19,990 for the base model with 4GB RAM, and Rs 22,990 for the top model with 6GB RAM. I was at the launch event where I got to play around with the Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50, and here are my first impressions.

Watch: Samsung Galaxy M10 & M20 First Look

Samsung Galaxy A30, Galaxy A50: Design and display

Besides focusing on aggressive pricing, Samsung has also focused on the design aspect of the smartphones. Up front, you get a 6.4-inch full HD+ display running at an aspect ratio of 1080×2340 pixels. There is also a notch on top which Samsung calls it as Infinity-U, and it houses the front camera.

The back is made from plastic with glossy finish and beautiful gradient finish. At first glance, it appears like glass back, but only when you touch and feel it, you realize it is plastic. There are two differentiating factors though, the Galaxy A30 has a physical fingerprint scanner, whereas the Galaxy A50 doesn’t, as it comes with an in-display scanner. More on that later.

Samsung Galaxy A30, Galaxy A50: Cameras

Samsung has focused on the photography aspect of the smartphones, where the Galaxy A30 comes with dual camera setup – one is a 16-megapixel sensor (f/1.7 aperture) and other is a 5-megapixel sensor (f/2.2 aperture) with ultra-wide angle lens. Up front, there is a 16-megapixel front camera for selfies and video calling.

The Galaxy A50, on the other hand, comes with a triple rear camera setup comprising of a 25-megapixel (f/1.7 aperture) paired with a 5-megapixel depth sensor and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with field of view of 123-degrees. Basically, you can take standard photos, capture some more with that ultra-wide-angle lens or add bokeh effects to your photos with live focus mode where the depth sensor comes into play. The camera also supports slow motion videos at 240fps. Up front is a 25-megapixel camera for selfies and video calling.

Samsung Galaxy A30, Galaxy A50: Battery

With the Galaxy A-series, Samsung has focused on the battery life aspect of the smartphones. All three smartphones come with 4,000mAh batteries with support for 15W fast charging over USB Type-C. On average, Samsung claims to offer a battery life of over a day.

Samsung Galaxy A30, Galaxy A50: Software and hardware

The recently launched Galaxy M-series was a bit disappointing on the software side, but that’s not the case with the Galaxy A-series. Both the smartphones run Android 9 Pie with One UI skin on top. In the little time I spent with the phones, the software appeared buggy, but they were the demo units running pre-production software. We would only be able to pass a proper judgment when we get review units. There are some preloaded apps from Google such as Gmail, Duo, Chrome, Drive, and YouTube among others. The phones also support Samsung Pay Mini, Bixby, AR Stickers, Dolby Atmos and more.

On the hardware front, the Galaxy A30 is powered by an Exynos 7904 octa-core SoC paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The Galaxy A50, on the other hand, is powered by an Exynos 9610 octa-core SoC paired with 4GB / 6GB RAM with 64GB storage. Both devices also come with dedicated microSD card slot for further storage expansion.

Lastly, talking about security, both smartphones come with face unlock feature supported by the front camera. While the Galaxy A30 comes with a physical fingerprint scanner at the back, the Galaxy A50 is Samsung’s first mid-range smartphone to come with an optical in-display fingerprint scanner.

Initial impressions

With the new Galaxy A-series, Samsung has shown its aggressive side. Both the Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50 are aimed at millennials, and offer features that matter. These include a large capacity battery with fast charging, high-resolution selfie snappers, latest Android OS, and a modern design. But what is interesting is the pricing, and the fact that these smartphones will be available to purchase both online and offline. All these factors could offer a big boost and help Samsung regain lost ground. We will soon be reviewing both smartphones so stay tuned for that.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi Note 7 First Impressions: Refreshing design with aggressive pricing

Xiaomi unveiled the Redmi Note 7 Pro in India today at an event in New Delhi. The company also launched the Indian variant of the Redmi Note 7, which was first announced in China last month. These have been priced aggressively in India. The base variant of Redmi Note 7 with 3GB RAM costs Rs 9,999, while the top variant with 4GB RAM costs Rs 11,999.

Coming to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro pricing, and it starts at Rs 13,999 for the base variant, and goes up to Rs 16,999 for the top variant. These will be made available online through Flipkart and Xiaomi’s own mi.com starting March 6 and March 13 respectively. I got a chance to use these devices at the Xiaomi India event today, and here are my initial impressions.

Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro: The Big Change

In terms of design aesthetics, Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro look completely different from previous generation of Redmi Note 6 Pro and Redmi 6 Pro. Xiaomi has opted for waterdrop-style notch, which it is calling ‘Dot Notch’ display. Also, the back has ditched metal unibody for a glass and colorful gradient design.

Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro Design: First Look

In terms of design aesthetics, both smartphones look identical, except the color treatment of Redmi Note 7 Pro’s back glass, which sports gradient finish in India. The Indian variant of the Redmi Note 7 sports single color glass back in Onyx Black, Ruby Red, and Sapphire Blue color options. Xiaomi has used Gorilla Glass 5 protection on the Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro.

Up front, both Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro feature ‘Dot Notch’ display, which is a 6.3-inch LTPS in-cell panel with full-HD+ resolution. It looked decent for indoor lighting and even the touch response was fine in limited time that I spent with the device. In terms of bezels, these are quite thin at 1.95mm, but the bottom chin looks a tad thick. Xiaomi has put up the speaker grill on the top bezel, just above the selfie camera.

Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro: Cameras

Xiaomi has used different camera setup for the Redmi Note 7 in India. The smartphone came with 48-megapixel main sensor in China last month, but the Indian variant has 12-megapixel sensor instead. The dual setup uses primary 12-megapixel sensor with 1.25-micron pixels and a secondary 2-megapixel depth sensor.

On Redmi Note 7 Pro, the handset offers 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor instead of Samsung ISOCELL GM-1, which it used in Redmi Note 7 in China. It is again supported by the secondary 5-megapixel depth sensor. Both smartphones pack same 13-megapixel front camera, which is claimed to offer AI portrait mode, smart beauty features, and scene recognition support.

I did manage to use cameras on both smartphones, but for a very limited time and only in indoor lighting conditions. I didn’t find any difference in imaging as both clicked pretty similar shots with decent amount of detailing. Having said that, it’ll be too early to say anything about the camera performance, and you’ll need to wait for our final review for the same.

Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro: Initial thoughts

Both smartphones from Xiaomi come at a competitive price in India, especially the Redmi Note 7 Pro, which offers Snapdragon 675 and Sony’s IMX586 48-megapixel camera sensor at starting Rs 13,999. In my limited time, I could hardly tell any difference between the two phones. Even the camera results were pretty much similar. In terms of design as well, it was difficult to differentiate between the two phones. The new glass design for Redmi phone is a refreshing change from last year’s metal unibody look, also these now support USB Type-C charging for the 4,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 4.0.

I didn’t get much time to use these devices, but considering Xiaomi has opted for Snapdragon 660 and Snapdragon 675, there shouldn’t be much of a problem in the performance department. One can expect smooth multitasking, and but cameras need to be tested before our final verdict. So keep an eye out for our full review of the Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro.

Huawei Mate X First Impressions: Meet the future of thin flexible display smartphone with 5G

MWC 2019 expo is in full swing in Barcelona, and one of the things that has created headlines is foldable 5G smartphone from Huawei called the Mate X. When Royole FlexPai launched at CES in January 2019, the race was to become first in world to launch any kind of flexible or a foldable smartphone.

In all honesty, using the device at MWC, I feel Royole just rushed for the early fame instead of making a good product. Samsung, which was second manufacturer to tease its implementation of a foldable phone, finally revealed it ahead of MWC. The Samsung Galaxy Fold, gets a big 7.3-inch display on the inside, and keeps a 4.6-inch display outside. The thick design does get the flexible part right, but it also reminds me of the Nokia communicator (Nokia 9000) in terms of form factor.

Coming to the Huawei Mate X, the flexible display implementation in this device is completely different from the other two. Technically it is the third folding device, but it is still ‘world’s first 5G foldable device.’ In terms of design and form factor, the Mate X appears more realistic, and it is by far the most unique device as well. Though Huawei didn’t let anyone touch the device, we did get to visually experience it up close and personal, and here’s what I feel about this futuristic device from Huawei.

Innovation that took 3 years

The Huawei Mate X’s flexible display folding mechanism is based on ‘Falcon Wing Mechanical Hinge’, which is essentially the most important thing that made the phone a reality. It took Huawei three years of R&D to make the hinge, and of course, the company has got it patented as well. Having explained that, Kevin Ho, President of Huawei’s smartphone product line, also briefed on how there is still work left in certain aspects before the Mate X’s official release.

Huawei’s Mate X features a flexible P-OLED panel, and the dual-displays come in sizes of 6.38-inches and 6.6-inches separately in touch-phone form factor. Huawei is calling these panels as the dual true FullView displays. In terms of ergonomics, the Mate X is only 11mm thick in phone mode despite of double display, and it transforms into an 8-inch tablet with only 5.4mm thickness.

Watch Video: Huawei Mate 20 Pro First Look

Inside the Mate X you’ll find the flagship Kirin 980 SoC paired with 8GB RAM and 512GB onboard storage. The handset features side-mounted fingerprint sensor on the power button. Other than that, there will be triple cameras in total on the phone, but specifics about the camera lenses have been kept under warps by Huawei.

5G and 55W Supercharge

For 5G, Huawei has used 7nm multi-mode modem chipset Balong 5000 on Mate X. This supports both standalone and non-standalone 5G, which means it is future ready with dual-SIM feature that supports both 4G and 5G. But the innovation doesn’t stop with 5G only. The Huawei Mate X also comes with world’s fastest 55W SuperCharge technology, which is 600 percent faster charging tech used in iPhone XS Max. Huawei says that it can charge battery from 0 to 85 percent in just 30 minutes. You will find not one but two thin batteries totaling at 4,500 mAh in the Mate X.

As far as the performance is concerned, the Huawei Mate X uses company’s own 7nm Kirin 980 SoC with 8GB of RAM and 512GB storage. Huawei did mention that it used Android 7.0 Nougat to build upon the final EMUI software for the Mate X, but there is still a lot more to go before the final release.

Initial thoughts

The foldable buzz is just being created, and it is safe to say that Huawei’s Mate X is the best-looking implementation yet. Unfortunately, the Mate X won’t be coming to India until the 5G roll out is well and truly on its way. Having said that, we might get to see full or a part of this technology make its way into other Huawei devices in the future. For other markets like China and Europe though, Huawei intends to make the Mate X available by the “middle of 2019”.

PUBG teams up with Horizon Zero Dawn team to bring exclusive items to PS4

It seems PUBG creator Bluehole has been inspired by the co-operation between Resident Evil 2 makers and the PUBG Mobile developers. The developers have now tied up with the makers of Horizon Zero Dawn to create unique content for the PS4 version of PUBG, which will be available to all players who complete the set and required tasks. These missions will become available from March 5 and will continue till April 5, which will give players ample time to complete.

“Our collaboration with Horizon Zero Dawn follows in the footsteps of our previous Uncharted and The Last of Us content. To match the two different IPs, PUBG Corporation and Guerilla Games collaborated closely on the concept, design and production elements” says Taehwan Noh of PUBG Corporation. “As fans of Horizon Zero Dawn, the results exceeded our expectations, and we can’t wait to see players wearing the items in our game.”

“When we first spoke with the development team of PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS about adding Horizon Zero Dawn themed items, we instantly thought of the Eclipse” – shares Roy Postma, the Art Director of Guerilla Games. “This secretive and militaristic cult fits perfectly in the PUBG universe; its members dress in intimidating ceremonial garb, intended to strike fear into the hearts of all who dare oppose them. Their warlike nature is displayed by their use of ejected bullet casings from ancient war machines, which they work into rosaries and other ornamental motifs, as well as their masks, which they use to hide their identities.”

Here are the tasks to complete to earn the respective items

Horizon Zero Dawn Eclipse Top:

– HZD Eclipse Top can be claimed by logging in to the game during the event period.

Horizon Zero Dawn Eclipse Mask:

Motorola confirms an upcoming foldable phone that will look like the Razr

Mobile phone pioneering company Motorola seems intent on not being left behind in the race to introduce foldable smartphones. Like Samsung and Huawei, Motorola VP of Global Product Dan Dery in an interview with Engadget has confirmed that the company is indeed working on a foldable smartphone. We had previously seen leaks of design specs of a foldable smartphone patent from Motorola which looked distinctly like the Moto Razr. Though Dan didn’t quite confirm if the company is looking at that particular design style, he has confirmed that Motorola plans to arrive at the party at the same time as the others.

This means that Motorola is probably planning for a summer release of its foldable smartphone as Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X are set to launch in some months time. “We started to work on foldables a long time ago,” Dery said. “And we have been doing a lot of iteration.” When asked about the design elements of the phone, Dan expressed that even though Samsung and Huawei’s approach with a screen on the outside is “the nicest and the purest” way to go, this tends to make the phone fragile and Motorola plans to do it differently.

The design specs seen of the Moto Razr like phone is definitely different from the foldable approach the companies have shown so far. He has even added that Motorola has been testing a plastic foldable device with a plastic film on top, but that has made it very much scratch prone. Hence the display cannot be put on the outside.

WATCH: Moto One Power First Look

He happened to mention that Motorola is not in the business of making tablets which falls to Lenovo, the parent company. This means we can discount the possibility of seeing a side opening phone that would transform into a tablet. There is also the possibility of Motorola introducing a dual-hinge smartphone, but all will be revealed in time.
