Oppo is targeting smartwatches, smart headphones in 2019’s 5G+ era: CEO
Oppo isn’t just going to produce innovative smartphones, the company is planning smartwatches, smart home products and smart headphones for 2019. In an interview with Qualcomm China, Oppo‘s CEO, Chen Mingyong talked about company’s plans for 2019. He suggested ‘they will take the lead in targeting smartwatches and smart headphones’ to explore the 5G+ era this year.
Oppo launched first-of-its-kind smartphone Oppo Find X last year, and Chen reconfirmed that there will be successor very soon. We can expect the phone to be launched within the first half of 2019, and it would incorporate the latest Snapdragon 855 processor.
On being asked if Oppo is going to stick to only mobile phones, Chen said (via Dailyhunt) “The 5G+ era is not just the Internet of Everything, but also the integration of all things. The deep integration of 5G with AI, AR and other technologies will lead to new hardware, new connections and new services. At the beginning of this year, Oppo officially established the emerging mobile terminal business unit to explore new entrances in the 5G+ era. Based on the user’s high frequency and cross-scenario usage, we will take the lead in targeting smartwatches and smart headphones to create the next entry-level product.”
Watch Video : Oppo Find X First Look
Talking about the Oppo’s history and current market position, Chen also said that Oppo provides technology products and services to more than 250 million users in more than 40 countries. When it comes to 5G+ era, while the smartphones will remain the core, the company will also explore an open IoT (Internet of Things) platform, and has started building upon. It’ll work with partners and developers to create IoT products and services in 2019.

Samsung Galaxy S10+ official render leaked; release date tipped too
As MWC 2019 is inching closer, rumors and renders of Samsung‘s flagship Galaxy S10 family have started picking up the pace. As always, the new Samsung smartphones will see the light of the day a few days before MWC 2019. The company is reportedly gearing up to launch its flagship Galaxy S10 series at an Unpacked event on February 20 in San Francisco. Among the latest developments, an official render of the Galaxy S10+ has been leaked.
The leaked image (courtesy of 91Mobiles) backs the previous leaked CAD models and real-life photos. One can notice that the Galaxy S10+ would feature two cameras on the top right corner of the smartphone and triple rear camera setup, as per the render. It will be featuring the fancy punch-hole display design, which could house one standard and one wide-angle selfie camera. The triple rear camera setup may offer a telephoto lens, a wide-angle sensor, and a standard lens.
Rumors are rife that the device could feature a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display, identical to what we have seen on the Galaxy Note 9. In addition, the render suggests that the handset with Infinity-O display will be offering slimmer bezels when compared to older Samsung smartphones. The render also noticeably suggests that Samsung might ditch the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.
Backing the previous leaks, this further suggests that the South Korean giant could incorporate an in-display fingerprint sensor. Interestingly, one can notice that the date mentioned on the leaked image suggests that the device might hit the store shelves on March 8, 2019. An earlier report from Gizmodo also indicated that the Galaxy S10 series will be available for preorder from February 20, and will be released on March 8.
Watch: Samsung Galaxy Note 9 First Look
Additionally, the Galaxy S10 Plus is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC or Samsung home-brewed Exynos 9820 chipset depending on the region. The chipset will be aided by 6GB/12GB of RAM, as per previous reports. The device is expected to run on the latest Samsung’s One UI based on Android Pie.

Xiaomi will soon add 4K at 60fps to Mi 8 with a new software update
Chinese smartphone maker and electronics giant Xiaomi is planning to release a new update for its Mi 8. According to new information, the company is working on adding 4K video recording at 60fps as part of the update. The device was shipped with support for recording 4K video at 30fps out of the box. President and co-founder of the company, Lin Bin was the first to spill the beans about this upcoming feature. He also revealed more details about the feature adding that the company was planning to roll out the feature in coming two months while responding to a question by a Weibo user on his post.
The information about the company added 4K recording at 60fps was initially reported by GizmoChina. However, as previously reported the company is referring to 1080p video recording at 60fps instead of 4K resolution. Reading about 1080p video recording at 60fps one may think that this is a basic feature for a flagship that a smartphone company launched in 2018. However, the device only came with support for 4K video recording at 30fps and 1080p recording at 30fps along with 120fps and 240fps for slow motion.
Watch: Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro First Look
Talking about other video recording modes, the device can record 720p video at 30fps, and 240fps. It is likely that the company may add 60fps video recording both at 1080p and 4K resolutions. Considering that the device comes with a similar camera sensor to what we have seen in the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3, the exclusion of 60fps in the Mi 8 is surprising. This is because Mi MIX 3 comes with support for 60fps video recording both in 1080p and 4K.
The 60fps support is not the only camera-related feature that Xiaomi has released for Mi 8 after the launch of the device. As previously reported, the company also rolled out support for Night Scene mode and 960fps slow-motion video recording in the past few months. This report comes right around the time when reports indicate that Xiaomi is planning to launch its Redmi Note 7 in India on February 12.

E-comm FDI rules: Disappointed with govt decision to implement changes in haste, says Flipkart
US retail giant Walmart-backed Flipkart Friday said it is disappointed with the Indian government’s decision to implement the changes in rules for e-commerce companies with foreign investment in “haste”. The Bengaluru-based company added that it remains committed to compliance “despite the significant work that is required to change our supply chains and systems”.
The new regulations announced in December – under Press Note 2 – would bar online marketplaces with foreign investments from selling products of the companies where they hold stakes as well as ban exclusive marketing arrangements.
Effective February 1, online marketplaces – Walmart-backed Flipkart and Amazon – will have to undertake a massive restructuring of their operations in India to ensure compliance. We are disappointed that the government has decided to implement the regulation changes at such haste, but we are committed to doing everything we can to be compliant with the new rules,” a Flipkart spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added that despite the significant work required to change its supply chains and systems, the company remains confident that it will continue to serve its customers and sellers well. Asserting that policy should be created in a consultative, market-driven manner, Flipkart said it will continue to work with the government “to promote fair, pro-growth policies that will continue to develop this nascent sector”.
Despite intense lobbying by the two giants, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) said it had “been decided, with the approval of the competent authority, not to extend the deadline” of February 1.
An Amazon spokesperson Thursday stated that the company will continue to engage with the government to seek clarifications and work towards minimizing the impact on its customers and sellers.
Small traders have, in the past, complained that deep discounts offered by e-commerce firms were hurting their business. Various trade bodies had also alleged that these entities were giving preferential treatment to certain sellers. The new rules would require these online marketplaces to bring in massive changes in their business models.
One of the clauses states that the inventory of a vendor will be seen as controlled by a marketplace, if over 25 percent of the vendor’s purchases are from the marketplace entity, including the latter’s wholesale unit. Over the last few weeks, both Amazon and Flipkart had been extensively lobbying — directly as well as through associations and trade bodies — with government officials seeking an extension in deadline. They had also written to the government stating that they need more time to understand the details of the framework.
Batting for the players, the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) had dubbed the new e-commerce rules as “regressive” and said these changes would harm consumers, create unpredictability and have a negative impact on the growth of online retail in India.
According to a Crisil report, nearly 35-40 percent of e-retail industry sales – amounting to Rs 35,000-40,000 crore – could be impacted due to the tightened policy. However, smaller players like Snapdeal and ShopClues have welcomed the development, saying it will create a genuine and robust e-commerce sector in India.
According to sources, both Flipkart and Amazon were extremely hopeful that the government will soften its stand but given the magnitude of investments at stake, these companies had already started working on their plan B in case the deadline wasn’t extended. Amazon had committed an investment of over USD 5 billion, while Walmart made its biggest bet pumping in USD 16 billion for 77 percent stake in Flipkart.

Amazon Echo smart speakers, Amazon Basics products unavailable as revised FDI policy kicks in today
Online shopping platform Amazon has been making the lives of users easier with deliveries on almost all kinds of products available from its own sellers. But these services seem to have been halted since last night and users have taken to social media platforms like Twitter to complain about the same. Amazon has been replying back to the disgruntled users from its Amazon Help Twitter handle with a standard reply which says, “Apologies for the inconvenience. The pantry products are temporarily unavailable. Alternatively, groceries can be purchased from other sellers on the Amazon platform. Customers have to select “Groceries” from the “Shop by Category” filter, next to the product search before they key-in the product name.”
Amazon products like those from the Pantry, Amazon Basics and Amazon’s own devices like the Echo speakers, Fire Stick and Kindle products have now been listed on the website from third-party sellers. The primary seller for these products used to be Amazon’s own Cloudtail. Most of these products listings on the website don’t even have the option to select the seller.
Pantry products are temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience. Alternatively, groceries can be purchased from other sellers on the https://t.co/9ttWeOMbwq platform. ^SM

— Amazon Help (@AmazonHelp) February 1, 2019
One of the possible reasons for this could be the revised foreign direct investment (FDI) policy which was announced in December by the Commerce and Industry Ministry of India for the e-commerce sector, which would end discounts and cashback offers that online platforms with foreign investment were offering. The policy was all set to come into effect on February 1 and it seems removing its products for the moment is the approach Amazon has taken presently.
The FDI stated that the e-commerce platforms will not be able to sell products on its own platform that come from brands that are directly or indirectly owned by them. The policy also states that platforms can’t have more than 25 percent of its sales from private labels, which is to make sure the platforms can’t exercise any ownership or control over its own inventory. The logic behind the introduction of such strict FDI policy is to make sure that the e-commerce platforms can’t undercut the smaller vendors by offering discounted prices. We have written to Amazon for inputs on the same and will update when they reply back to our queries.

Energizer Ultimate U620S Pop, U630S Pop smartphones with dual-lens pop-up front cameras announced
It may be primarily known as one of the world’s largest manufacturer of batteries, but Energizer, quite interestingly, also likes to dabble in the field of mobile phones. The company will be making an appearance at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, where it’ll be showcasing as many as 26 different mobile devices. However, it seems Energizer doesn’t want to wait, and has already outed details about its new ‘Ultimate’ series smartphones.
Energizer Ultimate U620S Pop: Specifications and Features
The specifications aren’t final and could change when the smartphones are actually launched. Starting off, we have the Ultimate U620S Pop. The standout feature of the smartphone is its dual-lens (16-megapixel and 2-megapixel) front camera system, which is housed into a pop-up module (similar to Vivo’s NEX S) that rises from the center of the top edge of the smartphone’s frame. This allows the smartphone to have an almost zero-bezel display – a 6.2-inch FullHD+ display with a resolution of 1080×2280 pixels and a 19:9 aspect ratio.
The Ultimate U620S Pop is powered by a MediaTek Helio P70 SoC, combined with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. There’s even a tri-lens camera setup at the back, comprised of a 16-megapixel sensor, a 5-megapixel sensor, and a 2-megapixel sensor. All standard connectivity options are there (except the 3.5mm audio port). The whole package is backed by a 3,200mAh battery, which is a bit on the smaller side, especially considering that this is an Energizer phone. That said, there’s fast-charging support.
Energizer Ultimate U630S Pop: Specifications and Features
The Ultimate U630S Pop also comes with a dual-lens (16-megapixel and 2-megapixel) front camera system, built into a pop-up module rising from the top edge of the smartphone’s frame. The smartphone’s near bezel-less display is a 6.3-inch HD+ panel, with a resolution of 720×1480 pixels and an 18.5:9 aspect ratio.
Powering the Ultimate U630S Pop is MediaTek’s Helio P22 chipset, paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The rear camera system is a dual-lens affair, comprised of a 16-megapixel sensor and a 2-megapixel sensor. The smartphone has all regular connectivity options (but no 3.5mm audio port). A 3,500mAh battery rounds off the spec sheet, and there’s fast-charging support as well.

Other Smartphones
Apart from the above-mentioned two smartphones, Energizer’s ‘Ultimate’ line-up also has three other smartphones – U650S, U620S, and U570S. These come with displays having ‘waterdrop’ style notches, and are all powered by different MediaTek SoCs.

These are the top 5 least used items in PUBG
Popular battle royale game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has a lot of items that appear in the game. Unlike most other games, PUBG has customization for its weapons and attachments that are available which a player must use in order to control their weapons better, receive less damage and heal in case they lost hit points. Items like weapons muzzle compensators, scopes and healing items always top of the list of the most used items in the game. But that does not mean that all items that Bluehole has made available are used as much. And these are the top five least used items in PUBG.
Gas Can
Gas Cans are found all over PUBG on all the maps, but this happens to be among the least picked up items by players. A Gas Can is essentially used to refuel vehicles that are out of gas, but thankfully most vehicles on all the maps of PUBG come with enough fuel to get to a far away safe zone. Hence there is hardly any need to refuel vehicles, which in turn results in the fact that Gas Cans are not used in the game.
Quickdraw Magazine
Quickdraw Magazines are available for almost all the types of weapons that are available in PUBG, apart from the shotguns. But players usually don’t prefer using this, because all this attachment does is lower the reload time of weapons. Instead, players like to use the Extended Magazine over this one when available which provides more bullets.
Shotgun Choke and Duckbill
The Shotgun Choke and Duckbill are used to limit the spread of the blast from the weapons, and since Shotguns themselves are seldom used in the late game, users refrain from using these items as well.
Stun Grenade
Many players don’t even bother using grenades and among all the throwables in the game Stun Grenade and Smoke Grenade are the only ones that don’t do any damage. But unlike the Smoke Grenade which is useful for making an escape and blocking vision, the stun grenade needs precision use which only blinds and deafens enemies. Since it is difficult to use players avoid picking this up.
WATCH: PUBG Beryl M762: All you need to know
R1895 Revolver
The R1895 Revolver happens to be among the least used weapons in the game even though it deals a lot of damage. The Revolver only holds seven bullets and has an extremely high reload time. It has a very low rate of fire as well and which results in the need for extreme accuracy without any sights being available on it.

The device will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC with an Octa-core CPU, up to 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. The highlight of the device will be the 48-megapixel primary camera sensor on the back along with a secondary 5-megapixel camera sensor along with the dual-LED flash module. The front of the device will come with a 12-megapixel camera sensor for selfies. In terms of connectivity it will come with Bluetooth v5.0, GPS, Wi-Fi, Infrared, 3.5-mm audio socket, FM Radio, USB Type-C port, and dual VoLTE 4G-enabled nano-SIM slots.

Xiaomi ranks 4th in Top 5 smartphone companies globally in 2018: IDC
In 2018, Xiaomi’s 32.2 percent growth surpassing a total volume of 100 million mark has made it the 4th largest smartphone company in the world, according to IDC. The market research firm on Wednesday released total shipment sales for the 2018 calendar year and Xiaomi has shown impressive 32.2 percent (YoY) growth after Huawei’s 33.6 percent in top 5 companies globally.
Coming to the number 1 company in shipments, Samsung shipped a total of 292.3 million units in 2018 for a market share of 20.8 percent despite a negative 8 percent change in year-on-year (YoY). For the number 2 position, Apple shipped 208.8 million units and even their year-on-year (YoY) growth was negative 3.2 percent.

— Mi (@xiaomi) January 31, 2019
IDC also points out that smartphone sales in 2018 declined globally. The only three companies managed to increase their shipments are Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo. Having said that, the Q4 results were not great for Huawei. It shipped fewer units than Samsung and Apple, however, the overall 2018 numbers recorded significant growth.
“Globally the smartphone market is a mess right now,” said Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers. “Outside of a handful of high-growth markets like India, Indonesia, Korea, and Vietnam, we did not see a lot of positive activity in 2018. We believe several factors are at play here, including lengthening replacement cycles, increasing penetration levels in many large markets, political and economic uncertainty, and growing consumer frustration around continuously rising price points.”

It’s been noted that overall, Xiaomi did exceptionally well in a few markets in Western Europe, most notably Spain. The old Redmi series, which is now a separate brand, continued its lead in emerging markets.

After Facebook, Apple bans Google from running internal iOS apps
Apple recently blocked Facebook‘s Research VPN app for violating terms of its developer agreement and accessing data of users in exchange for $20 per month. Yesterday, reports claimed that Google too has been running a data vacuuming app, which the search giant said will shut down. But, Apple has blocked Google’s ability to distribute its internal iOS apps, before Google could voluntarily shut it down, TheVerge reported.
However, the Cupertino giant has now restored Facebook’s enterprise certificate. The report mentioned that a person familiar with the matter asserted that “early versions of Google Maps, Hangouts, Gmail, and other pre-release beta apps have stopped working today, alongside employee-only apps like a Gbus app for transportation and Google’s internal cafe app.”
“We’re working with Apple to fix a temporary disruption to some of our corporate iOS apps, which we expect will be resolved soon,” a Google spokesperson said. Commenting on the issue, an Apple spokesperson in a statement to BuzzFeed said that “We are working together with Google to help them reinstate their enterprise certificates very quickly.” This further clears that Apple will soon restore the search giant’s enterprise development certificate. Those unaware of the enterprise certificate, it is basically software permission, that lets companies load internal mobile apps onto the smartphones of beta testers, research participants and employees.

Yesterday, we reported that Google has been running an app labeled Screenwise Meter, that lets users earn gift cards “for sideloading an Enterprise Certificate-based VPN app that allows Google to monitor and analyze their traffic and data.” Google also issued an apology asserting that “the Screenwise Meter iOS app should not have operated under Apple’s developer enterprise program — this was a mistake, and we apologize.
We have disabled this app on iOS devices. This app is completely voluntary and always has been. We’ve been upfront with users about the way we use their data in this app, we have no access to encrypted data in apps and on devices, and users can opt out of the program at any time.”

The Nokia 7.1 smartphone came with HDR-enabled PureDisplay powered by Pixelworks visual processor, and it got great reviews from the tech community around the world. Hence, HMD has decided to build up on that success.
The San Jose, California-based Pixelworks Inc. provides power-efficient visual processing solutions, and now in partnership with the Finnish company HMD Global, both are looking to enhance the viewing experience on next-generation Nokia smartphones with advanced display processing technologies.
The Nokia 7.1 was the first smartphone to combine Pixelworks’ 4th generation Iris processor and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 platform. During our review of the Nokia 7.1, we also found a “marked difference when comparing the panel with a ‘regular’ display.” The Nokia 7.1 can also convert SDR content to HDR in real time, making for a relatively consistent visual experience, and it is one feature that differentiated Nokia 7.1 from all the other mid-range smartphones in the market.
“As mobile becomes the go-to destination for content viewing, consumers worldwide seek a premium display and video performance. We’ve been delighted by the response to Nokia 7.1 from our fans. The PureDisplay with Pixelworks technology was a significant part of our promise,” said Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer, HMD Global. “We are pleased to continue working with Pixelworks and look forward to bringing this experience to future Nokia smartphones.”

“The Nokia 7.1 with Pixelworks’ enhancements has set a new bar for visual quality in mid-tier smartphones. As imaging and mobile video consumption continue to reach new heights, together HMD Global and Pixelworks are making a premium visual experience more accessible to the masses,” said Anthony Gioeli, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Video Devices at Pixelworks.

Global smartphone market declined for the first time in 2018: Report
from Gadgets Now http://bit.ly/2t04Gee
via IFTTT
2018 was the worst year ever for smartphones, IDC and Counterpoint say in new report
Smartphones, which were seen as a hot commodity in the world, have reached a saturation point in sales. Both IDC and Counterpoint Research have released new reports which state that 2018 was the worst year ever for the smartphone industry and they say that there is no bounce back in sight. The annual report came as part of fourth quarter numbers, which say the industry registered a decline of 4 percent last year. While IDC and Counterpoint Research have different methods to calculate these numbers, the general consensus is that the industry saw its worst annual decline yet.
According to IDC and Counterpoint Research, both Apple and Samsung saw decline in their shipments, which led to drag in the shipments of entire industry. Both the research firms note that Samsung saw its shipments decline 8 percent year-over-year but the Korean giant managed to retain its position as the market leader. IDC estimates Samsung to have shipped 292.3 million smartphones in 2018, down from 317.7 million shipped in 2017. Counterpoint notes Samsung shipped 291.6 million smartphones, down from 318.1 million devices shipped in 2017.
Apple, according to IDC, shipped 208.8 million iPhone in 2018, a decline of 3.2 percent from 215.8 million devices shipped in 2017. Counterpoint estimates Apple to have shipped just 206.3 million iPhone models in 2018, a 4 percent decline from 215.8 million devices shipped in 2017. While Samsung and Apple saw their shipments decline, Chinese smartphone makers such as Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi saw growth.
Huawei was the biggest winner in the smartphone race with both IDC and Counterpoint estimating it to have gained nearly 34 percent in shipments. IDC says Huawei shipped a total of 206 million smartphones in 2018 while Counterpoint claims it shipped 205.3 million units. Xiaomi is estimated to have shipped 122.6 and 121 million smartphones by IDC and Counterpoint respectively. Oppo shipped 113.1 million smartphones in 2018 to see a marginal growth of 1.3 percent. Counterpoint says Oppo shipped 120.2 million smartphones to register flat change in growth.
Watch: Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition First Look
During the fourth quarter of 2018, IDC says smartphone shipments were down by 4.9 percent capping off the worst year. “Outside of a handful of high-growth markets like India, Indonesia, Korea, and Vietnam, we did not see a lot of positive activity in 2018. We believe several factors are at play here, including lengthening replacement cycles, increasing penetration levels in many large markets, political and economic uncertainty, and growing consumer frustration around continuously rising price points,” said Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers.
“This is the first time that the global smartphone market has witnessed decline for a whole year. The decline in smartphone shipments can be attributed to lengthening replacement cycles in developed markets like US, China and Western Europe. Smartphone OEMs tried to push sales by adding features such as AI, multiple camera assemblies, full-screen displays, in-screen fingerprint scanners etc. but consumers held on to their devices longer due to the absence of groundbreaking innovations and higher prices of devices being offered by the OEMs,” said Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research.

Sony Xperia XZ4 could have a triple-lens rear camera system with a 52MP sensor: Report
We’re now just weeks away from Mobile World Congress, which is arguably the biggest and most-important event for the mobile industry. Almost all Android OEMs will be unveiling their newest smartphones at (or around) MWC 2019 in Barcelona, Spain. Earlier this month, Sony started sending out invites for its MWC 2019, where the Japanese technology major is expected to unveil its newest top-tier smartphone – Xperia XZ4. Over the past few weeks, there have been a handful of leaks and rumors regarding Sony’s upcoming flagship. A new bit of information has now surfaced online, revealing interesting details about the smartphone’s camera.
According to a report by Sumahoinfo, Sony Xperia XZ4 will have an insane 52-megapixel sensor as part of its primary camera setup. If a separate report from Gizmochina is to be believed, the 52-megapixel sensor will be part of a triple-lens rear camera system belonging to Sony Xperia XZ4 Premium. The ‘regular’ version of the smartphone could come with a dual-lens camera system. A render shared by Sumahoinfo shows that the 52-megapixel lens will be the main one, and it’ll be accompanied by a 16-megapixel telephoto lens and a 0.3-megapixel ToF lens.
Watch: Sony Xperia XZ3 First Look
Interestingly, the same publication (Sumahoinfo) recently talked about some of the hardware specifications of the XZ4. If that’s indeed the case, Sony Xperia XZ4 could come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. It’s also likely to come with a massive 4,400mAh battery. The smartphone’s highlight feature is its extra-tall 6.5-inch OLED panel, which is expected to have a 21:9 aspect ratio. In any case, we’ll find out what surprises Sony has in store for us, in a few weeks.

Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 and ZenFone Max M2 get January security patch via FOTA update
Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 and ZenFone Max M2 are getting new FOTA update that are aimed to further enhance the user experience on these two devices. Since the launch of Zenfone Max Pro M1 last year, Asus has been proactive to push out new updates at timely interval and it is continuing that tradition with the ZenFone Max Pro M2 and ZenFone Max M2 as well. The ZenFone Max Pro M2 is now getting FOTA version 15.2016.1901.186 while the ZenFone Max M2 is getting FOTA version 15.2016.1901.156 and these updates bring a number of system-level changes.
The FOTA version 15.2016.1901.186 being released for the ZenFone Max Pro M2 updates the device to January security patch. The update also brings support for AI camera scene detect, which will automatically detect the scene and change camera settings accordingly. It also upgrades the touch screen firmware and improves the front camera quality. The update also improved system power consumption, which could result in improved battery result than before and lastly, bumps the security level to January 2019.
The FOTA update released for ZenFone Max M2 is version 15.2016.1901.156 and it also brings security patch for the month of January 2019. The update adds camera support with AI scene detection, which is a feature being asked by customers these days. Asus claims that it has also updated and optimized the camera system for optimal experience with this update. The changelog also mentions that the FOTA version updates and optimizes the Android system.
These FOTA updates bring January security patch sooner than it has been in the past. There is a possibility that this is because of Google‘s rumored plan to force its OEM partners to release at least four security updates and stop certifying devices from OEMs, which fail to release these updates. The January security patch addresses a critical security vulnerability which could enable a remote attacker using a specially crafted file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process.
Watch: Honor 10 Lite First Look
The January patch also addresses issues affecting framework, system, kernel components, NVIDIA and Qualcomm components. It also fixes an issue with Qualcomm closed-source components and one of them is being rated as critical in severity. The update, Asus says, will be pushed to ZenFone Max Pro M2 and ZenFone Max M2 users in a phased manner and all users should get the update in the coming weeks.

Anker and RavPower debut first Gallium Nitride based wall chargers
Amidst all the gadgets we own and use everyday, one of the biggest problem is charging them. Every device comes with a different charger and use different wall charger that makes life miserable. However, the charging industry is going through a revolution and the revolution is coming to wall chargers and not just the ports used on their devices. Anker and RavPower are introducing chargers that are the first to use gallium nitride as the material. These new chargers are a leap in terms of design since they shrink down the power bricks that has never been seen before.
Anker’s PowerPort Atom PD 1 and RavPower’s 45W slimline design model are the first two wall chargers to use gallium nitride. The Verge, which has tried both these chargers, says that simply holding these two chargers is enough to understand the change. It says the 30W Anker power adapter is too small to charge anything bigger than a phone while the 45W power brick from RavPower is a bit larger than Anker’s offering but is yet smaller than the silicon-based charger.
Both the chargers, according to The Verge, deliver the output charge as mentioned on their respective labels. The chargers that use GaN could technically be much more efficient and waste less energy when compared to their silicon counterparts. The obstacle for the industry is simply about adoption where silicon has been in use for several years while GaN is relatively new.
Watch: OnePlus 6T – Warp Charge vs Dash Charge Compared
The 30W Anker Atom PD 1 reportedly struggles to charge something as big as a 13-inch MacBook Pro but it works well with devices such as phones, headphones, Nintendo Switch or anything else that supports USB Type-C port. The 45W GaN charger from RavPower is reportedly more impressive with support for charging more powerful devices like the MacBook Pro. These two power bricks show the future sans silicon based chargers and it could be great for those who don’t necessarily charge laptops.
