Indian firm makes electronic chip to help curb call drop, facilitate 5G

Bengaluru-based Saankhya Labs Wednesday unveiled the first indigenously developed electronic chipset that can be used for functions like direct TV broadcast on mobile devices, curbing call drops and 5G connections.

“Saankhya Labs, a Bengaluru-based company is launching its indigenously designed and developed, the world’s first and most advanced multi-standard next-generation TV system on the chip,” Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha said after unveiling the chipset.

All electronic chipsets, considered as the heart of modern devices, have been developed by foreign companies so far. None of them is made in India because there is no modern semiconductor manufacturing plant in the country.

Electronic chipsets of Saankhya Labs are also being manufactured at Samsung facility in South Korea.

“I am also told that this broadband-broadcast convergence technology has great potential to minimise or eliminate call quality issues faced by telecom operators today,” Sinha said.

Saankhya Labs co-founder and CEO Parag Naik said the chipset will help in separating video content from a mobile network and hence reduce the load on the spectrum for improving call quality.

Saankhya’s Pruthvi-3 chipset will facilitate direct transmission of video on mobile phones and can also help convert an Android-based smartphone into a satellite phone.

The company expects to launch its chipset-based mobile phone accessories in the form of a dongle and mobile phones within a couple of years, Naik said.

“Semiconductor technology takes time in maturing and adoption. Original design manufacturers will incorporate our chipsets into various products. We will try for getting certain standards based on our technology incorporated in 5G services. Our chipsets are 30 per cent more efficient in output compared to our nearest competitor and 50 per cent cheaper too,” he said.

The company already has clients in the US and China and bagged orders to supply 5 million chipsets for various kinds of devices.

“We are looking at 50 per cent year-on-year growth in business. In this financial year, we are expecting sales of around USD 14-15 million (Rs 98-105 crore). We have advance orders for supplying 5 million chipsets to companies in the US that they will use in tablets (PCs), television gateways etc. This order will be completed by the first quarter of 2020,” Naik said.

Saankhya Labs has started a pilot for rural broadband services in Scotland and Africa and received a request for the project in the Philippines, Brazil and the US.

“We are in talks with an Indian firm to start rural broadband trials in the country,” Naik said.

He said that in the next two years TV gateways, rural broadband technology, satellite communications and defence will be the main contributor to the business. PTI PRS MR MR

Huawei expects 21% revenue rise despite ‘unfair’ treatment

Chinese telecoms giant Huawei expects to see a 21 percent rise in revenue for 2018, its chairman said Thursday despite a year of “unfair treatment” which saw its products banned in several countries over security concerns.

Huawei would report sales revenue of USD 108.5 billion, up 21 percent year-on-year, rotating chairman Guo Ping said in a New Year message to staff.

Guo also said the firm had signed 26 commercial contracts for its 5G technology despite what he described as a year of “incredibly unfair treatment”.

“Huawei has never and will never present a security threat,” Guo wrote in the message titled “Fire is the Test of Gold”.

“Setbacks will only makes us more courageous, and incredibly unfair treatment will drive us to become the world’s number one,” he added.

The company has been under fire this year, with Washington leading efforts to blacklist Huawei internationally.

A top Huawei executive was also arrested in Canada earlier this month at the request of the US, which is engaged in a bruising trade war with China.

This month, Britain’s largest mobile provider BT announced it was removing Huawei equipment from its 4G cellular network after the foreign intelligence service singled out the company as a security risk.

In November, New Zealand’s intelligence agency barred Huawei equipment in the rollout of the country’s 5G network on the same grounds.

Australia and the United States also enacted similar bans earlier this year, leaving Canada the only country in the “Five Eyes” intelligence network not to take steps against the Chinese firm.

Huawei founder Ren is a former People’s Liberation Army engineer and there are concerns of close links with the Chinese military and government, which the firm has constantly denied.

Last week, the Chinese tech firm sought to dispel the fears around its technology by taking the unprecedented step of opening its research and development labs to media.

“Banning a particular company cannot resolve cybersecurity concerns,” Huawei’s rotating chairman Ken Hu told reporters.

“Huawei’s record is clean.”

Meanwhile, chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested on December 1, is fighting extradition to the US where she faces charges of violating Iranian trade-related sanctions.

She has been released on bail and is now living under electronic surveillance in a luxury home in Vancouver.

Following her arrest, two Canadians were detained in China on grounds of national security in what has largely been seen as retaliation for Meng’s case. (AFP) PMS PMS

AI could be first ‘resident’ of Mars: Elon Musk

Tech billionaire and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk wants to establish a base on Mars, and he has indicated the first resident on the planet could be Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Responding to a tweet that asked Musk what his thoughts were on the first Martian being an intelligent machine rather than a human, he replied: “30%.”

How Musk came up with this percentage remains a mystery, however, many people are wondering what this AI “resident” could look like, according to the Geek.

“It’s possible that it could be a rover-like bot that explores the planet, or a stationary device that makes observations and conducts experiments without human assistance,” the Geek report added.

Currently, manned Mars missions are completely hypothetical.

Companies such as SpaceX and scientific bodies around the world have been working towards inventing technologies to allow humans to venture beyond Earth’s moon but it could still take a decade or perhaps several decades before that is attempted.

Musk had told the media in November that there is “70 per cent chance that he will go to Mars”, despite a “good chance” of him not surviving either on the way or after landing. It is only very likely that only a few people might be willing to join Musk in this journey – either because of the risk or the cost involved.

This year, the US space agency NASA also firmed up its plans to return humans to the Moon and use its lunar experience to prepare to send astronauts to Mars in the 2030s.

Happy New Year: Google kicks off 2019 with an animated doodle

The year 2019 is upon us, and Google is leading the New Year celebrations. As is the case every year, the search giant has featured a cute animated doodle on its homepage. It is basically a continuation of the animated doodle we saw yesterday on Google’s homepage.

It features the same pair of partying elephants who were seen getting ready for the clock to strike midnight. The clock in today’s doodle has struck midnight, and the elephants jumping with joy. Google’s description for today’s doodle reads, “Well, it’s time to call out the elephant(s) in the room: it’s out with the old and in with the new! Here’s to a bright year ahead.” The baby elephants are surrounded by balloons and party decor, and one of them is seen blowing popcorn through its trunk which forms ‘2019’ before crumbling to the ground.

The New Year 2019 Google Doodle has a global reach, and is not restricted to any particular country. The reach map shows every continent mapped in blue shade, which is not the most common sight for doodles that appear on Google’s homepage.

Watch: Pachinko parlors of Japan

As is the case every year, Google has been prompt in coming out with creative doodles to celebrate the holiday season. Last month, the company featured an animated doodle on its homepage to celebrate Christmas. This doodle showed the Google logo decked in festive decorations like red cherries, mistletoe and red stockings and red cherries. We also saw Santa Claus with his reindeers sleeping near the Christmas tree.

Samsung tops in number of patents filed for self-driving cars

Samsung Electronics Co. filed the largest number of patents related to self-driving cars in Europe, data showed on Monday, far above traditional automobile manufacturers.

According to the data compiled by the European Patent Office (EPO), the number of applications related to self-driving cars filed in Europe came to 3,998 in 2017, growing more than threefold from 922 tallied in 2011.

Over the 2011-2017 period, Samsung Electronics held the most patents at 624, trailed by US IT giant Intel Corp. with 590.

US chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. held 361, followed by Samsung’s smaller South Korean rival LG Electronics Inc. at 348 and German engineering firm Bosch with 343, the EPO data showed.

The figures indicate information and communication technology firms made more efforts to secure self-driving technologies compared with traditional vehicle manufacturers.

Among the top 10 players in the list, only three firms — Bosch, Toyota Motor Corp. and Continental AG — were related to the motor industry.

Europe accounted for 37.2 per cent of the patents, followed by the US with 33.7 per cent. South Korea accounted for 7 per cent, falling behind Japan’s 13 per cent but standing higher than China’s 3 per cent.

According to separate data compiled by the Korea Institute of Intellectual Property, Hyundai Motor Co. filed the highest number of related patents over the 2008-2017 period in the country at 981, followed by Hyundai Mobis Co. with 686 and Mando Corp. with 564. LG Electronics and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute posted 293 and 238, respectively.

Apple iPhone battery replacement program is ending today in India

Remember the entire controversy when Apple was slowing down your old iPhones because of battery degradation over time? The company clarified that it was doing this to ensure a stable experience on iPhone instead of instability caused by weak batteries. Apple stated that the slow down in performance was because of a power management feature that was known as “Battery Health”, and first shipped to devices with iOS 10. After facing criticism from across the globe, the company launched a battery replacement program for its iPhones at a discounted rate.

The battery program was also available in the Indian market, and was also applicable to devices that were out of warranty. The program initially covered devices including iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and the iPhone SE. The company went on to extend the program to include devices including iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. As part of the program, the company was offering a discount of 30 percent for users getting the batteries replaced for their old devices. The program was initially launched back in December 2017 and it is set to close today on December 31, 2018.

So if you own an old iPhone and want to get its battery replaced at a discounted price then you should hurry to your nearest Apple Store to make use of this discount. This is especially helpful if you are an old iPhone user and you plan to continue with that model. This move will essentially help you in replacing one of the most crucial parts of iPhone at a discount.

Considering that you go ahead with the battery replacement on your old iPhone then this should also help you recover some performance on your device. This is because the “Battery Health” feature will see that the health of the battery in the device has been restored, in turn removing the restrictions put on the performance of the device.

Huawei’s share in premium smartphone segment hits double digits

Driven by its P20 series shipments, Chinese smartphone maker Huawei’s share in the global premium smartphone segment hit double digits for the first time in the third quarter of 2018, according to Counterpoint Research. At a rate of over 19 percent, the global, premium smartphone segment grew faster than the overall smartphone segment that declined five percent in Q3 2018, according to Counterpoint Research’s Market Monitor Q3 2018 report.

Apple led the global premium smartphone segment capturing 47 percent share of the segment, followed by Samsung (22 percent), Huawei (12 percent), Vivo (five percent ), OPPO (five percent) and Xiaomi (three percent), Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint Technology Market Research, wrote in a blog post on Saturday.

In India, OnePlus continued to lead the premium smartphone segment for the second successive quarter capturing 30 percent of the market driven by the strong performance of its OnePlus 6. OnePlus is followed by Samsung, Apple, ASUS and Huawei as the top five smartphone brands in the country. While the premium segment growth for OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi was driven by performances in China, for OnePlus and Huawei, growth was generated outside China, Pathak said.

“Going forward, we estimate that the premium smartphone segment will grow in Q4 2018 driven by a full quarter of sales of new iPhones,” Pathak said. “In terms of distribution, premium brands sales are skewed in favor of offline retail,” he added.

Besides, Huawei recently took the wraps off the Huawei Y7 Pro (2019), which is priced at 3,990,000 Vietnamese dongs (approximately Rs 11,990). The Huawei Y7 Pro (2019) features a 6.26-inch FHD+ display along with a 19:5:9 aspect ratio. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass on top. The handset comes with dual rear cameras, Snapdragon 450 chipset, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It is powered by a 4,000mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 gets fourth beta of Android 9 Pie, final roll out likely on January 15

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 received the third iteration of Android 9 Pie beta update on Friday, and now the smartphone is getting another update. The update arriving for Galaxy Note 9 beta users is the fourth one and is rolling out in India, Germany and South Korea. The update is actually a minor one in terms of changelog accompanying the update.

The software version accompanying this new update is N960FXXU2ZRLT, according to Sammobile, and it should be available in other countries where the beta program has been officially launched. It was believed that the third beta released would be the last and final beta release of Android Pie for the Galaxy Note 9, however, Samsung seems to have further tests for the stability of beta update.

The Galaxy Note 9 is expected to get its final release of Android 9 Pie on or after January 15. The new update released today suggests that things have not been finalized yet. The changelog reveals that the update is meant to fix some touch-related issues including the one related to home button hard press, which did not function when navigation gestures are enabled. This was reported as one of the issues with the third beta update of Android Pie for Galaxy Note 9.

There were also reports of the keyboard app not responding on the bottom right of the display. The touch issues can be classified as critical, and Samsung must have thought that it is important to fix the issue before the official roll out. During the course of Android Pie beta for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, the devices got two updates that fixed issues related to touch.

In order to download the fourth beta update, head over to Settings -> Software Update and then tap on the Download and Install option. If you have a Galaxy Note 9 then you will have to try the update a couple of times before it starts installing on your device. It should be instantly available once a notice about the update arrives on Samsung Members app.

Google Pixel Slate’s laggy and sluggish UI might get resolved with software update

Google Pixel Slate was announced alongside the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones in October, but it did not go on sale until early this month. As soon as the Pixel Slate started shipping to those who pre-ordered the Chrome OS-based tablet, there were multiple reports of how the software was not properly optimized, and led to a laggy experience. The most noticeable lag is in the overview mode, which is ChromeOS’s version of task view. Now, a post on the Google Bugs page blames the sluggish response of the UI on “the use of Mask Layers to create rounded corners. This combined with background blur adds a lot of additional steps in the paint/rendering pipeline.”

In the post, spotted by Chrome Unboxed, the same engineer adds that once the rounded corners are removed on a device powered by a Celeron processor, the frames per second picks up and the memory improves. The lower-end version of the Pixel Slate is powered by Intel’s Celeron processor, and most complaints related to the device have been centered around the basic variant of the tablet. One of the viable reasons stated for the slow animation is the GPU memory limit that Google imposes with Chrome OS powering the Pixel Slate.

“The performance (fps increase) and memory improvement (tiles don’t get discarded and we actually see the content) is quite significant on Nocturne Celeron when rounded corners are removed,” malaykeshav@chromium.org, project member, wrote in the post.

Watch: Apple iPad Pro 2018 Hands-On

The post suggests that the lag seems to be caused by a software issue, which means it can be fixed with a future software update. The issue became a deal breaker after some users reported that the lag and sluggishness in the UI made the Pixel Slate not usable at all. Google has not directly offered any statement as to how it plans to rectify the situation, but it does seem that an update will fix all the issues. If you bought the Pixel Slate then it is recommend that you wait till Google issues a Chrome OS update to resolve these issues, especially for the base model powered by Celeron processor. If you are planning to buy the Pixel Slate then you should wait till Google resolves these issues.

Microsoft files magnetic USB Type-C connector patent; could use in Surface tablets

Microsoft has filed a patent application for a possible future magnetic USB Type-C connector for next-gen Surface devices. The Surface Pro 6 uses the proprietary Surface Connect, but on the other hand, the Surface Go tablets employs USB-C.

The patent states that “in some implementations, the latch mechanisms may include a USB-C connection.” Microsoft filed the patent application with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on May 23, first spotted by Patently Mobile.

So instead of forcing a connector into a device, Microsoft wants to provide users with a ‘magnetic experience’, and we can only assume on the lines of Macbook charging connectors. The patent details reads that the two parts will snap together “even when they are a relatively large distance away, without any external force; and/or may allow the two to detach under a wider range of external forces (without any damage to the system).”

The company recently filed dual-display foldable device patent on USPTO as well. The granted patent revealed a dual-screen tablet like foldable device. The patent titled ‘HINGED DEVICE’ was filed on USPTO by Microsoft in August 2017, and it talked about a hinge mechanism to fold a dual-screen notebook like device in half.

The patent showcased a device with a hinge mechanism to fold it, and a lock which pops open when touching the lock button. Microsoft is known to be working on a foldable device for a long time now, but the company never officially acknowledged it. These patent don’t usually mean that there is device coming, but report suggest that it could be implemented on Andromeda.

Chinese kid sells kidney to buy iPhone 4, now disabled for life

One common joke or meme after launch of every iPhone in developing countries is that “you will need to sell your kidney to buy Apple’s newest smartphone”. The statement is rooted in the belief that iPhones are so expensive that you will need to sell your organs to buy one. However, a new story shows how such a measure could lead to tragic turn.

According to Oriental Daily, a Chinese media platform, Xiao Wang went to such extremes and sold one of kidney to buy iPhone 4 almost seven years ago. Call it Wang’s ill fortune, the decision did not work out the way he would have anticipated. The report states that when iPhone 4 was launched, Wang was only 17 and at that time, the iPhone 4 was described as a “must-have” device in this school. In fact, those who owned one were treated differently and Wang, now 24, decided that he needs to have one as well.

In his quest to own iPhone 4 whatsoever, Wang realized that his family’s financial situation would not allow for him to buy Apple’s shiny new smartphone. He then started looking for ways to procure additional cash needed to buy the iPhone 4 and eventually he was informed about an underground operation where he could sell his kidney for cash.

Wang’s decision was supported by information that he needed only one kidney to survive. An underground hospital that he found offered him an estimated RMB 22,000 (around Rs 223,300 or $3,200), which was more than enough to buy the newest iPhone from Apple. Wang did not think through and sold his kidney. At the time of operation, Wang was told that he would be able to lead a normal life after a week of recovery. However, what he did not know back then was that the operating environment was not sanitized properly, leading to infection on his wound.

Source: iDropNews

“Worse still, his parents were kept in the dark about this major operation and only found out when the teen became terribly sick from the infection,” the report mentioned. By the time Xiao sought proper treatment from a proper hospital, the function of his single kidney had deteriorated to an extent that he has been forced to bed for the past seven years and his family was pushed into financial crisis due to expenses incurred for dialysis and other treatments.

The report notes that both the arbitrator and the illegal hospital which performed the process on Wang were brought to justice. Xiao’s family reportedly received “sufficient” monetary compensation from the court. However, the ordeal has been so long and so hard that Wang has already lost his youth and dialysis is only expect to further complicate his ideas of leading a normal life. It is one of the many stories of a desire to own Apple’s flagship product taking a catastrophic turn.

Google’s Messages app gets Truecaller-like spam protection feature

It may not be as well-known as Gmail, Maps, or YouTube, but Messages, Google’s default app for handling SMS/MMS is an essential part of the (stock) Android experience. It’s simple, lightweight, and supports new messaging protocols like RCS (Rich Communication Services). And with the latest update, it can even protect your smartphone from spam text messages.

According to Android Police, Google has now begun rolling out the new spam protection feature to the Messages app. Since it’s a server-side update and Messages is used by billions of Android users across the world, it may take a while for the new functionality to be enabled for everyone. However, having checked it out on our smartphones, we can confirm that it’s indeed there.

With the new feature, Messages app now automatically tries to detect unwanted text messages to check if they’re spam. If it doesn’t, you can ‘train’ the feature to work better by tapping on either one of the ‘Report spam’ or ‘Report not spam’ options. Thus, the feature works similar to Truecaller’s spam detection functionality. It’s worth mentioning that with spam protection enabled, some information about your messages is sent to Google. However, this doesn’t include your phone number or the actual content of the reported text messages.

Watch: Google Pixel 3 XL Hands On

By default, spam protection is turned on. In case it isn’t, you can enable it manually by going to Messages’ settings and navigating to Settings -> Advanced -> Spam protection -> Enable spam protection. The afore-mentioned step to send spam reports to Google is also optional. If you don’t want to do that, you can simply block a phone number without reporting it as spam.

Samsung patent hints at smart running shoes with mobile connectivity

Samsung has been trying to build an ecosystem of connected devices on top of its IoT system for sometime. The Korean giant has already connected its smartphones, televisions and other large appliances to a single system and now, a new patent suggests its ambitions might stretch beyond consumer electronics. Samsung might be planning to make its own line of smart running shoes integrated with sensors and a smartphone app to configure activities. This could be part of Samsung’s expanded efforts to make more smart accessories and enter into apparel side of smart connected devices.

Samsung first showcased SmartSuit, which was targeted at athletes and was supposed to help them train for the Winter Olympics. Its spinoff launched Iofit shoes on Kickstarter two years ago and those were aimed at golf players. There is a possibility that these new patents for running shoes hint at a more mainstream training shoes aimed at casual users and not limited to professional runners or athletes. The patent does not giveaway a lot of information about the shoes when it comes to smart aspect of it.

Source: LetsGoDigital

The patent, spotted by LetsGoDigital, suggests that sensors will be placed inside the shoes and can be activated in one of two ways. One method involves pulling the tab on the back of the shoe while the second involves a mechanism with buttons hidden behind a cover, which could again be on the back of the device. The big missing piece is how smart these shoes will be and what kind of activities will they be capable of tracking.

Watch: Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Hands-On

Samsung would only need a pedometer and tracking sensors to count steps taken with the shoe. However, there are shoes that can measure pressure to understand whether you are running the right way or if you are prone to injure yourself. The company could also use a companion app to help users configure training exercises depending on their performance. Will the shoe support Bixby for voice actions? That is another possibility but the patent listing does not show any signs of Samsung’s digital assistant.

Facebook least trusted tech company: Survey

In a reflection of what a series of data leaks and scandals has done to damage the reputation of Facebook, a new survey has found that the world’s largest social network leads the list of companies that people trust the least. According to a survey of 1,000 people conducted earlier this month by research company Toluna, 40 percent of respondents said they trusted Facebook the least with their personal information, PCMag.com reported last week.

In terms of lack of trust among its users, Facebook leads other technology companies by a huge margin, according to the survey. Facebook is followed by Twitter and Amazon which tied for the second position with lack of trust from eight per cent of the respondents for each of the companies.

Following Twitter and Amazon are Uber and Google. While seven per cent of the respondents said they did not trust Uber with their personal data, six per cent said the same of Google. Microsoft and Apple fared comparatively well. While four per cent of the respondents expressed lack of trust in Apple, just two per cent of the total respondents said they did not trust Microsoft with their personal information.

Netflix and Tesla tied for the position of the most trusted companies in the list, with one per cent of the respondents showing lack of trust in each of these two companies.

LG G7 ThinQ Android Pie update to roll out sometime in Q1 2019

Earlier this month, it was reported that LG is preparing a new Android 9 Pie system update for its flagship smartphone LG G7 ThinQ, but now it seems that the update isn’t coming anytime soon. The South Korean company has now officially listed the release date for the stable Pie update for the G7 as Q1, 2019, so it can be any time between January and March.

Last month, when LG announced registrations of the Android 9 Pie beta for the LG G7 ThinQ in South Korea, it got users excited about the arrival of a stable update soon. Even a South Korean LG G7 ThinQ user uploaded a video showcasing the new changes in Android 9 Pie update. These changes included a new gesture-based home navigation system, adaptive brightness and adaptive battery, and Digital Wellbeing functionalities.

Keeping in mind that LG usually rolls out Android OS update in its home market first, followed by other countries after some time, so it is possible LG G7 ThinQ users outside Korean may have to wait at least until Q2 of next year.

LG launched the G7 ThinQ in India on August 10, earlier this year. The flagship smartphone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 SoC, paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, and supports microSD cards of up to 2TB (theoretical) in size. It sports a 6.1-inch notched display with a resolution of 1440×3120 pixels, complete with Dolby Vision/HDR10 support and 100 percent coverage of DCI-P3 color gamut.

The smartphone comes with a built-in Quad DAC for enhanced audio output.

Realme to expand its offline sales network to 150 cities across India in 2019

To say that Realme has had a great 2018 would probably an understatement. The young company introduced its first smartphone – Realme 1 – in May this year, and has since added four more smartphones to its portfolio. Customers’ response has been pretty great too, with smartphones selling out in minutes, and the company claiming to have sold 1 million devices in just four months of commencing operations. However, it seems that the former Oppo subsidiary has even bigger plans for next year.

Realme has announced that in 2019, it’ll expand its offline sales network to 150 cities throughout India. The company will begin with the country’s top cities and expand in a phased manner. It will also be partnering with offline retailers (which will be called REAL partners) for a better customer experience. Realme will begin its expansion as early as January next year, starting with 10 cities across the country, eventually adding 50 cities every quarter. Along with this, the company will be establishing 20,000 partner outlets in the country, and these will have all the smartphones that Realme has launched in India so far. In Mumbai, Realme smartphones will be made available for purchase in about 300 retail stores, with the number of stores eventually being increased to 500.

Commenting on the plans, Realme India’s Chief Executive Officer Madhav Sheth said, “Realme as a young brand is committed to delivering the best consumer experience to our customers. Strengthening our commitment, we are expanding our footprints to meet the rapidly growing customer demands. With the new offline stores we are extending our sales channels reaching out to our offline customers in every region. This is the extension of our sales strategy and ultimate target of ‘Realme for Every Indian’.”

Social media poised for more scrutiny, greater checks in 2019

With great power comes great responsibility. The quote made popular by the iconic comic series ‘Spider-Man’ sums up the challenges that social media platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook are facing in India. They have been accused of being a carrier of hate messages and fake news that incited mob violence. And, now they stare at the prospects of stricter government rules, greater accountability and regulatory scrutiny.

These platforms, for some of whom India is the biggest consumer base outside of their home country, can see very much clear the writing on the wall — follow the rules of engagement if you want to be in the world’s fastest growing economy. The year 2018 will go down in history as the one where social networking platforms not only made country-specific changes — be it labeling forwarded messages, limiting the number of people a user can send a message to at one go and launching a public awareness campaign against fake news. They also agreed to store user data belonging to Indians within the country.

Globally, the tech and social giants scrambled to make efforts to mollify users with better control of their digital profile and data trail, as they faced backlash over data breaches. India market was no different. Earlier this year, Facebook came under the regulatory glare after a global data leak scandal hit about 87 million users. British data analytics and political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica was accused of harvesting personal information of millions of Facebook users illegally to help political campaigns and influence polls in several countries.

Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad warned the US social media giant of “stringent” action for any attempt to influence polls through data theft, even threatening to summon its CEO Mark Zuckerberg, if needed. The IT ministry slapped two notices on Cambridge Analytica and Facebook over the data breaches. Facebook admitted that nearly 5.62 lakh people in India were “potentially affected” by the incident and rushed to tighten processes, to prevent a repeat. But Cambridge Analytica continued to be evasive and in mid this year, the Centre asked CBI to probe the alleged misuse of data of India’s Facebook users by the British political consultancy firm.

Facebook, meanwhile, to bring transparency in political advertisements in the run-up to 2019 general elections, is making it compulsory for advertisers to disclose their identity and location before any such ad material can be run on the popular social media platform and Instagram.

Twitter, too, intensified its crackdown on fake and automated accounts and began removing suspicious accounts from users’ followers to give a “meaningful and accurate” view of follower count. But, it was Facebook-owned WhatsApp that faced the maximum heat after rumors circulating on the messaging platform incited mob fury and claimed over a dozen lives in various parts of the country. The toxic messages that spread on WhatsApp instigated riots in certain cases, as people forwarded and misinterpreted videos on the messaging platform.

Following government’s warnings, WhatsApp recently named a grievance officer for India and announced the appointment of an India head — a first for the country that accounts for most users across the world. It has launched a label that identifies forwarded messages and barred forwarding of messages to more than five people at one go.

As the Supreme Court voiced concerns over irresponsible content on social media, the government rushed to propose changes in IT Act’s rules and released draft amendments which would require “intermediaries” to enable tracing of originators of information when required by government agencies.

In the political slugfest that ensued, the Congress alleged that if the amendments were cleared, there would be a tremendous expansion in the power of the “big brother” government on ordinary citizens, “reminiscent of eerie dictatorships”. Some Cyberlaw experts have equated the changes in rules to India’s own anti-encryption law.

The proposals require social media firms to deploy technology-based automated tools for proactively identifying, removing or disabling public access to “unlawful information or content”. If approved, these changes will place social media platforms — even those like WhatsApp which promise users privacy and encryption — firmly under government lens, forcing them to adopt stricter due-diligence practices.

The amendments — which come ahead of the general polls in 2019 — propose that platforms would have to inform users to refrain from hosting, uploading or sharing any content that is blasphemous, obscene, defamatory, hateful or racially, ethnically objectionable, or threatens national security.

When backed by lawful order, these platforms will have to, within 72 hours, provide assistance as asked for by any government agency. The IT ministry has met Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Google, and others to discuss the proposed changes and public feedback has been sought by January 15.

The seemingly-infallible tech behemoths are already being equated with big oil and big tobacco, in Western markets. The larger question is whether the shifting public perception and recent moves by the government to regulate these habit-forming, new-age platforms would change the very essence of social media, once considered a harbinger of free speech and individual rights.

Premium mobiles to eye customer attention in 2019, sans e-commerce deep discounts

Snazzier phones with premium price tags are set to vie for Indian customers’ wallets in 2019, but it would be entry-level and affordable smartphones driving sales volume in the world’s second largest smartphone market.

However, exclusive launches and deep discounts on e-commerce platforms like Flipkart and Amazon could become a thing of the past as new rules for online marketplaces with new rules coming into effect in February.

According to experts, 2018 was a vibrant year for smartphone companies in India as shipments grew by an estimated 11 per cent to about 150 million units. And the growth streak is expected to get a bit better at 12 per cent in 2019.

The stellar growth saw India uprooting the US as the the world’s second largest mobile phone market by volume — ranking behind China but handset prices have been skewed towards lower-end of the market.

“This is likely to change fast. We expect that mid-range smartphones, those with wholesale prices in the range of $200-400, will grow 20 per cent year-on-year in 2018 and by almost four times during the next five years to make it one of the most important smartphone segments,” Counterpoint Research Associate Director Tarun Pathak told PTI.

He said the sales volume sweet spot is moving from sub-$150 segment towards mid-tier as many features and capabilities common among flagship models, progressively diffuse through to these lower price bands.

Also, with features like full-screen displays, dual-cameras, biometric security and support for artificial intelligence being made available in more mid-range devices, customers don’t seem to mind paying more for the latest technologies.

The 4G feature phones — designed to bring new users online — continued to gain traction among users during 2018 with Reliance Jio making a strong push for these devices.

Xiaomi, which held onto the numero uno spot in a hyper-competitive market, said it expects the average selling increasing gradually.

The company has already expanded its product range to include televisions and said it will continue to focus on bringing more categories and more innovative products to India. Premium players like OnePlus and Apple also expect strong growth in sales in 2019.

OPPO, which has recently set up a research and development facility in India, is focused on localizing products and creating consumer centric devices for consumers in the coming year. The Chinese player, much like its peers, expects the premium segment market to grow and shape out well in 2019.

For Transsion — which operates multiple brands in India including itel, Infinix and Tecno — the Rs 7,000-15,000 segment of smartphones is expected to contribute highest in 2019.

Globally, new innovations like 5G and even foldable screens are trends that consumers are keenly awaiting. However, it may be some time before new gadgets with these new features make inroads in the Indian market.

Interestingly, high demand — coupled with increased customs duties — prompted many vendors to ramp up production in the country.

From being entirely dependent on imports to meeting almost 100 per cent of the domestic requirement, India has come a long way.

According to India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), the mobile handset manufacturing in terms of value for 2018-19 is expected to touch a whopping Rs 1.65 lakh crore with a volume turnover of about 29 crore units.

“The resurgent mobile handset manufacturing eco-system in India has saved the country of approximately Rs 3 lakh crore through replacement of complete build unit imports and the growing domestic assembling or manufacturing of handsets,” ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo said.

He added that India’s mobile handset and components manufacturing industry has successfully established 268 manufacturing units, generating employment for over 6.7 lakh across the nation.

An ICEA-McKinsey report said if India extends its ambitions to the export market, it could manufacture around 1,250 million handsets by 2025 and create an industry worth around $230 billion.

The onslaught of the Chinese giants like Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo continued during the year with these three players alone accounting for over 44 per cent of the shipment in the July-September quarter.

Despite the intense competition, domestic players like Micromax and Lava remain upbeat. Lava International Head (Product) Tejinder Singh said brands engaged in short-term strategies in India would fail.

“…brands like Lava, which have invested heavily in R&D will deliver products rich in quality and provide the best consumer experience to its customers. We feel that this cut throat competition is actually good for the industry as it pushes everyone to improve consistently, rethink strategies and optimize costs for the consumers,” he explained.

According to Micromax co-founder Vikas Jain, further ‘consolidation’ could be seen in the industry that has seen exit of players like Comio and HTC this year.

“Consolidation is likely to be seen in the market with some smaller players exiting. Quality of products and services, across price bands, are important factors for customers. It’s not cheap phones, but value for money that they seek,” he said.

The industry also saw the entry of new players like Realme in the country. Realme India CEO Madhav Sheth believes competition will continue to be intense, especially in the mid-range.

While smartphone launches may hog limelight through the year, the PC industry remains also remains upbeat on 2019. HP India Senior Director (Personal Systems) Vickram Bedi said the PC market in India is going through a transformative phase wherein the premium and gaming segment are leading the growth momentum of the entire category. Arnold Su, PC and ROG Head at Asus India shared similar views. “The ‘thin and light’ segment is expected to dominate 2019. The objective is to build powerful laptops which are easy to carry at an affordable price point,” he said.

This is published unedited from the PTI feed.

Essential Phone discontinued, the company working on second mobile product

Essential Phone, the first device from Andy Rubin, the co-founder of Android, has reached its end of life. The company announced, according to 9to5Google, that it is discontinuing the device. Droid Life was the first to spot that the Essential PH-1 has gone out of stock on the company’s website, and Essential confirmed that it has exhausted its inventory and won’t be making any more models. The announcement comes after multiple reports emerged that the company is abandoning its first smartphone to focus on other mobile products.

“We are sold out of Essential Phone on essential.com and won’t be adding any new inventory. We are now hard at work on our next mobile product and will continue to sell accessories and provide speedy software updates and customer support to our existing community,” the company said in a statement. Essential says it is working on its second mobile product, which could be the rumored smartphone with AI has the user interface and one that will answer emails and messages for you. The company is not directly confirming whether this second mobile product is a smartphone but that could be the case considering Rubin’s experience with Android and other investments.

Essential Phone was first showcased at Code Conference, and was dubbed as the most ambitious Android smartphone. However, it was delayed due to manufacturing issues and when it finally went on sale, most were disappointed with the experience. The software experience, which was as stock as that of Google, failed to nail the imaging experience, which led to critics terming the device fails to justify the retail price. Since then the Essential Phone has seen multiple discounts and dropped to as low as $250 (around Rs 17,500), making it a better value than OnePlus.

Essential has faced issues beyond product including poor sales and layoffs that followed the launch of the smartphone. One of the biggest misgivings came in the form of an early data breach and reports of sexual misconduct against Andy Rubin when he was still employed with Google. Bloomberg even reported that Essential shelved plans for Essential Phone 2, and the company might go under the hammer.

Watch: Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC Key Features

While Essential’s struggles remains a big story of this year and the year before, the company also emerged as an unlikely champion in the software department. The company consistently issues updates days after Google pushed out software updates. At times, the Essential Phone got security patch before Google’s own Pixel lineup and it dropped Android 9 Pie just hours after Google made it official on August 7. It needs to be seen what Essential does next but in the meantime, it plans to offer accessories and continued product support to those who paid for the Essential Phone.

Bangladesh suspended high-speed mobile internet on election day

Bangladesh Government asked telecom regulators to shut down high-speed mobile internet services until midnight Sunday, the day of a national parliamentary election. The Bangladeshi Telecommunication Regulatory Commission followed to the orders and reportedly shut down 3G and 4G mobile data to “prevent rumors and propaganda” that could affect voters on election day, reported Reuters.

The latest move of suspending internet services was to help prevent violence and misinformation, which went effective immediately after the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission announced the information on Saturday. “The decision has been taken to prevent rumours and propaganda surrounding the vote,” Zakir Hussain Khan said.

The decade-long Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration has been marred by allegations of intimidating and imprisoning activists, critics to help maintain power. According to Aljazeera report, this could be another extension of that strategy, as the ruling party hopes to retain power in these elections as well.

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is now longest-serving leader in the nation. Hasina is seeking a third-straight term since winning a landslide in December 2008.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led the campaign for the deployment of over 600,000 soldiers, border patrol, paramilitary and police officers who have fanned out across the country in advance of the elections, added report.

Facebook seeks Indian IT companies help to solve its fake news issues

Facebook has beefed up outsourcing to Indian IT companies for content moderation, anti-money laundering and data analytics, according to a report by Economic Times. The popular social media network is continuously facing global pressure and scrutiny to hinder the spread of fake news or fraud on its platform. Following which, the company has boosted outsourcing to Indian IT services, including HCL Technologies, Wipro and Tech Mahindra.

The cited source asserted that in the past few months, Facebook has deepened engagement with Indian IT firms including Genpact and Accenture. “One executive of a tech firm said the combined contracts of Indian companies with Facebook is valued at over $400 million and would only increase as the social media company seeks human help in resolving issues that it had earlier thought would be helped by technology,” the report stated.

Facebook, Tech Mahindra and Accenture did not comment on the issue. The spokespersons of Wipro and Genpact said they would not discuss specific customer engagements, the report mentioned. HCL Technologies too declined to comment.

Additionally, Facebook has over 294 million Indian users, which is said to be the massive user base as of October 2018, as per a report by Satista. Earlier this year, the social network had faced scrutiny over its users private data being accumulated by Cambridge Analytica to influence the US election results. Later, the social network’s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg vowed to improve security and content review on its platform.

Apple iPhone XS Max reportedly catches fire in the pocket of owner’s trousers

Back in September this year, Apple launched its iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR smartphones. Toting a massive 6.5-inch OLED panel, the XS Max is, quite literally, the company’s biggest smartphone ever. Its price tag is also equally big, with the top-of-the-line 512GB internal storage model costing a staggering Rs 144,900 in India. However, it seems Apple’s super-premium smartphone isn’t without its issues. And if the newest report is anything to go by, those issues, even if isolated, aren’t minor.

According to iDrop News, a man from Columbus, Ohio, United States, claimed that his three-week old iPhone XS Max caught fire while in the pocket of his trousers. The man, identified in the report as J. Hillard, said that during his lunch break, he noticed a strange smell coming from his smartphone, kept in a rear pocket of his trousers. Hillard further said that he felt a lot of heat and burning sensation on his skin, which was followed by green and yellow colored smoke coming out of the iPhone XS Max. The smartphone owner had to quickly remove his trousers (which got damaged) and shoes, following which a colleague helped him douse the fire with a fire extinguisher.

“From the time of first noticing the fire and between removal of the pants and taking the phone out of my pocket and placing it outside, I inhaled a lot of smoke. Later in the day, the team told me about the video that the office security camera captured,” Hillard was quoted as saying by the iDrop News report.

Following the incident, the (obviously) furious owner of the destroyed iPhone XS Max went to his nearby Apple Store and demanded a call from the customer relations team. After being made to wait for almost an hour, Hillard was told that the only thing the store could do was to offer him a replacement smartphone.

Unsatisfied with the treatment meted out to him, the owner reportedly returned home with the damaged smartphone and called up Apple Care. After explaining everything to a specialist over the phone, sharing photos of the destroyed iPhone XS Max, and engaging in multiple follow-up calls, he was essentially offered the same thing – a replacement smartphone. He denied the same, saying that a new phone isn’t an acceptable solution for what he had to go through. He’s now contemplating legal action against Apple for the same.

Watch: Apple iPhone XS, XS Max Hands On

These past few months haven’t really gone well for Apple. Last month, another user had claimed that his Apple iPhone X exploded while in the process of upgrading to iOS 12.1. Although incidents like these aren’t widespread, they do erode the confidence of customers (both new and existing) in the company and its products, even if a little. With the competition in the smartphone world set to intensify even further in 2019, it remains to be seen how Apple will fare next year.
